Yesterday was the 2012 New York Cares Leadership Conference , and I had the distinct pleasure of presenting a session to volunteer leaders and inspiring community members. The session focused on using core socialmedia platforms Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to raise awareness and inspire others as a volunteer.
Socialmedia: 56% of people donated to an organization because they read a story via socialmedia. 59% of people donate after becoming a follower of a nonprofit’s socialnetwork. 53% of people who follow a nonprofit on socialmedia show their support by volunteering. response rate.
Socialmedia continues to take greater stake in every nonprofit’s marketing, public relations, and advertising strategies. With 10+ major, free, socialnetworking channels to take advantage of, nonprofits have a smorgasbord of opportunities available to connect with constituents, donors, and potential volunteers.
Nonprofits were the early adopters of socialnetworks. The were active on Myspace, YouTube, and creating Facebook Groups long before most of the companies that are often praised for being the pioneers of socialmedia. One of the reasons was that socialnetworks were free to join and lacked monthly fees.
It was also my duty to organize four fundraising events each year and manage an average six volunteers in any given week. Adding socialmedia to that already packed job description just would not have been possible. The successful use of socialmedia requires a significant time investment.
It’s estimated that by late 2014 or early 2015 the majority of adults will get their information from socialnetworks rather than search engines and that socialnetworks will become the primary source of referral traffic to your website and blog. The effective use of socialnetworks is a skill not to be underestimated.
Six months ago I came pretty close to complete socialmedia burnout. I was running over 20 socialnetworking profiles, logging in seven days a week, and at minimum pulling 60-hour work weeks. If you are managing numerous socialnetworking profiles Monday-Friday, then you need some down time on Saturday and Sunday.
