This is the first post in a year-long blog and webinar series called 101 Best Practices for Nonprofits , written and presented by Heather Mansfield. Recently, the challenges of the work, like race and gender biases, imbalanced power structures, and increasing political polarization have left me exhausted. We advocate for our communities while operating within systems that may not always reflect our values or experiences. But what if we reframed how we approach this work?
I was inspired to try this practice. I reflected on the people that I planned to see that day and chose one thing that Id like to thank them for. Through the Centers nonprofit, Healthy Minds Innovations , they translate their findings into evidence-based practices for individuals and organizations to cultivate well-being.
Our DEI journey began with the realization that we lacked key perspectives that could enhance our work and further align internal practices with our mission. This led us to examine our practices and identify areas where we could do better. We continuously asked ourselves, “How can we disrupt inequality in our work?”
Rather than start at the beginning, I’m starting at the end by sharing some tips for a formal reflection process that can lead to improving results of a project or event. A structuredreflection process generates insights about what worked and what could be improved. Ask team members to reflect on their lessons learned.
Overnight Reflection. What I think is the magic is the use of “overnight reflection.” So, being able to “sleep on an idea” and share a reflection is great. I wish I had done a structured creative thinking exercise to get people comfortable. Then we opened up for discussion.
