Nikon has made no mention of things like computational photography for HDR-style photos or the cyclical buffering that smartphones do to simultaneously capture up to nine or 10 frames and combine them with each press of the shutter button. Upgrading the battery, camera, and screen sounds like an iterative, yearly update; they sound like the so-called “S” updates that Apple used to do for iPhones before its naming schemes became unpredictable. A more interesting upgrade is adding autofocus to that camera, which allows it to pick up a new trick: macro photography.
At 6.3mm thick when flat (12.8mm folded), it’s not nearly as thin as the dual-screen Microsoft Surface Duo , but it sounds thinner than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2’ s 6.9mm frame (including the camera) and bulging 16.8mm folded hinge. The USB-C passthrough port on the controller unfortunately doesn’t support audio, and the clever vent built to let sound from your phone’s bottom-firing speakers is only useful if your phone has speakers located there. I love seeing this $72 off deal on Sony’s WH-1000XM4 headphones (pictured above). This model of headphones released for $350 in August , improving on the excellent audio quality, sound-dampening noise cancellation, and long battery life of the XM3 from 2018. As for sound quality, it’ll do in a pinch, but this isn’t what I’d reach for if I wanted to sound crystal clear on calls or really appreciate my music. While the Bose also has a flat profile and a better library of sleep sounds, they don’t actually pair with your phone for audio, so meditations or audiobooks are out of the question.
The body fat scan involves you taking four pictures from an unflattering angle in your skivvies. It was deeply unsettling to watch the AI tell me in real-time that I sounded “sad,” “discouraged,” and “shy” — which was accurate given how uncomfortable I felt. None of those will ask you to take pictures of yourself in your undies.
Both cameras deliver a surprisingly reasonable picture. That said, the dual-camera setup is another cool-sounding feature that probably isn’t the most pragmatic: The rear camera isn’t good enough for actual photography of any kind, and the best use case is probably for snapping pictures of a whiteboard in class.
