Nikon has made no mention of things like computational photography for HDR-style photos or the cyclical buffering that smartphones do to simultaneously capture up to nine or 10 frames and combine them with each press of the shutter button. Processing power may be the last technological hurdle to computational photography in full-size cameras.
The most convenient controller for your Android phone, but not without a few problems The trouble of finding a reliable gamepad to use with your phone was, more or less, figured out when Android 10 and iOS 13 added native support for the DualShock 4 and Xbox One controller. Playing audio from your phone can be a struggle, too.
It’s not just that it has a very understated design (though this definitely plays a part), it’s that Sony’s whole approach is to give you as much control over the phone as possible. Control over how it looks, and sounds, and takes photos and video. If you want a phone that’s guaranteed to not turn heads then this is probably it.
phone without cutting too many corners. Alongside its lower-tier N100 sibling, it’s the first phone in OnePlus’ midrange Nord series to arrive in the US, available from T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile, and unlocked from OnePlus.com and other retailers. So what sacrifices did OnePlus make to create a $300 phone?
The OnePlus Buds require a OnePlus phone if you want to get the most from them, so these really won’t appeal to owners of other Android devices. The OnePlus Buds have strong battery life, decent sound, and a stable wireless connection. Like with AirPods, the open-air design of the OnePlus Buds will limit their sound potential.
Leviathan V2 sound system, following up its previous iteration that launched back in 2014. But, of course, the wired subwoofer is there to further amp up the booming low-frequency sounds. for wirelessly connecting to phones, tablets, and other sources, that may not be enough versatility for you. It just announced the $249.99
It’s not the cheapest budget phone, but it will go the distance If a $100 budget phone is the fast-food dollar menu and a $1,000 flagship is a steakhouse dinner, then the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G sits comfortably halfway between the two: the laid-back all-day cafe with surprisingly tasty food. More importantly, it’s good where it matters.
The company still doesn’t sell phones in the US, but there are international models with Google services available in countries like the UK, where it starts at £1,099 (about $1,500). Both phones have a 6.7-inch Turn the Find X3 Pro around, though, and it looks nothing like the OnePlus — or any other phone, really.
With a rumored $349 price, OLED screen, Google’s great camera, and a good-enough processor, the upcoming Pixel 4A sounds like it’ll be a tough deal to beat for those who don’t need a premium phone. And it looks like the phone will finally be launching on August 3rd. inch display (2340 x 1080 resolution).
Levoy headed up the team that developed the impressive computational photography technology used in Google’s Pixel smartphones, including features like Night Sight , Portrait Mode, and HDR+. Levoy’s efforts arguably inspired Apple, Samsung, and others to beef up their computational photography chops. We regret the error.
Sony is continuing its refresh of its smartphone line to focus on photography and video with the new Xperia 5 II. It’s the smaller sibling of the very tall and weirdly expensive Xperia 1 II , and this newer phone betters it in several regards. That sounds big, but since it’s so tall it works out to only about 2.68 inches wide.
The world’s first commercially available folding-screen phone wasn’t made by Samsung, Huawei or Motorola — it was the Royole Flexpai, a device that we called “charmingly awful.” This might be a picture of the actual phone, from the demo. Image: Royole. All other pictures appear to be renders. There, Royole’s promising its “waterOS 2.0”
The shutter click on your Android smartphone camera is usually not a problem, but if you prefer silence as you shoot, we show you how to turn off the sound.
A mood-setting novelty speaker that doesn’t slouch on sound Every so often, you get a reminder that Weird Sony is still alive and well. It’s fair to say that the $350 LSPX-S3 Glass Sound Speaker is exactly that kind of product. There’s no muddiness whatsoever to the sound. It might feel a little out of place in some contexts.
Apple has announced its iPhone 12 lineup, and as ever, the phones’ camera systems were the focus of much of the company’s presentation. The iPhone range is getting improvements across the board, but Apple appears to be reserving the biggest advances for its biggest phone. telephoto lens that the 11 Pro got last year.
Smooth operators The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max are phones designed for people who care about the details. Upgrading the battery, camera, and screen sounds like an iterative, yearly update; they sound like the so-called “S” updates that Apple used to do for iPhones before its naming schemes became unpredictable.
The Essential Phone heritage is clear. Osom, the company formed by Essential’s employees after the startup went under , has released new details about its upcoming OV1 phone, including a very familiar list of build materials. The OV1 looks like the Essential Phone, but Osom isn’t billing it as a spiritual successor. Image: Osom.
The first two — which start at $799 and $999, respectively — mark some of the least expensive flagship phones that Samsung has made in years, while the $1,199 S21 Ultra aims to be not just the top-specced phone in Samsung’s lineup, but also the best phone, period. And it’s easily my favorite thing about the new phones.
They’ve switched from an open-air design to a sealed fit; have better sound, thanks to that decision (and a partnership with THX); and they offer adequate active noise cancellation. For Samsung , it’s the clever new speech detection feature that enables ambient sound as soon as you start talking. In Apple’s case, that’s Spatial Audio.
Today that sounds like a ridiculous news item, but that’s the kind of thing Japan was known for back then — the country was often ahead when it came to the rollout of gadgety technology. NTT Docomo showed off all 611 of its phones to date at Tokyo Designers Week 2012. Back then, major products often came out here first, too.
And aside from a few tweaks Sony made to how it upscales music, the 1000XM4s sound just like their predecessors — a very good thing, trust me. The first is a simple convenience for anyone with an Android phone; Sony now supports Android’s Fast Pair for quick setup. Let’s get to the new stuff. Look familiar?
Metalenz skips over that part with a camera made of a single “metasurface” that could save precious space and battery life in phones and other devices… and they’re about to ship it. Consequently most of the photography advancements of the last few years have been done on the computational side.
While it still offers 12 megapixels like prior phones, the lens now has 7 elements and a larger f/1.6 ultrawide camera with a 120-degree field of view, a 5-element lens, and a 13mm-equivalent focal length, which sounds like the same ultrawide we got in the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. You also get: A second 12-megapixel f/2.4
Sony is announcing two new phones today, the Xperia 1 III and the Xperia 5 III. Each phone has the basic specs you’d expect on a top-flight Android phone: three cameras on the rear, a Snapdragon 888 processor, and support for 5G. The phone also keep the Xperia design language Sony landed on with the original Xperia 1.
The high-end Android phone of choice in 2022 — just go easy on the battery The Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus is the high-end Android phone most shoppers in the US should buy in 2022. They’re also two of a precious few options we have Stateside, which makes this recommendation sound like a backhanded compliment.
But despite their great comfort, good sound, and compact design, those earbuds had some key missing features and fell a bit flat on execution. Beats has outfitted its latest earbuds with 9.5mm drivers, and they produce very satisfying sound quality that I’d rank above the AirPods Pro. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge.
Big phones with small price tags If the TCL 20S and 20SE phones were on The Price Is Right , you would probably guess much higher prices than their retail ones. With the 20S retailing for $250 and the 20SE going for $190, these sub-$300 4G phones are the real deal. Of the two models, the 20S is slightly more manageable to use.
They retain the same enjoyable sound quality, and hands-free “Hey Google” access to Google Assistant and features like real-time language translation are still useful tricks to have at your disposal. The Bluetooth connection does seem to be stronger regardless of which pocket your phone is in. That’s a good thing.
If you have a recent Huawei or Samsung phone, you can use it to access their respective desktop modes. Photography by Dan Seifert / The Verge. The other issue is audio — the Ananta has two speakers on the back, but they sound rather terrible. You’re better off using your laptop’s native speakers for sound.
Jib True — available in black or this very attention-getting mix of blue, red, and yellow — manage to deliver a solid mix of specs and serviceable sound quality. As for how they sound, I found that the Jib True made for a solid seal in my ear with the included large-sized tips. I’ve been quite pleased with how the OnePlus Buds Z sound.
Yet, despite the fact that it starts at just £379 (around $480), the phone shares a lot of the DNA of the $699 OnePlus 8 released just a few short months ago, which, along with the OnePlus 8 Pro, was the company’s flagship handset for this year. It’s got a 90Hz display, just like the previous phone. Then there are its rear cameras.
It’s more capable, too, operating with the aptX low latency (aptX LL) codec that delivers good-sounding audio with no perceivable lag. Using the receiver, the GTW 270 Hybrid can be especially great for fast-paced games where sound cues count for success; but really, it’s nice to have for any title. But the sound isn’t too compromised.
It has great sound quality, near-360-degree sound delivery, long-lasting battery life, and elegant design — everything you can expect from the company’s previous models, but far bigger in size and power. And no matter how loud you like to play your music, it sounds clear and balanced with plenty of bass, mids, and highs.
HomePod mini sound quality. With the first HomePod, Apple prioritized sound quality above all else. That’s not quite the same with the HomePod mini, but you can still hear the effort that went into making the mini sound relatively good. I say “good” because, for its size, the HomePod mini sounds quite nice.
Bose’s sporty shades offer good sound, a steady fit, and total awareness It’s still fair to call audio sunglasses a niche category, but with Bose offering several models, Amazon in the game , and counting recent announcements from Razer and JLab , it’s certainly a growing one. Describing the sound quality of audio sunglasses can be tricky.
Google’s latest smart speaker has good sound and an attractive price Four years is an eternity in the modern tech product world, but that’s exactly how long it’s been since Google’s first smart speaker, the Google Home , was released. Still, the Nest Audio’s shape is hard to describe without accidentally sounding pejorative.
But most people aren’t really in the habit of switching back and forth between iOS and Android with each phone purchase. Samsung is consistently ranked as the biggest phone maker in the world. The Mi 11 would be a strong competitor to any S21 phone if you saw the two next to each other in a US carrier store. So who is it?
The Pixel 5 is Google’s next flagship smartphone, and Google has already revealed a few details: the phone is coming this fall, will support 5G networks, and will be available in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia, the company said in August. Narrator: it wasn’t.). The Pixel 5 may also have a 6.0-inch
Good sound quality and best-in-class noise cancellation come in an awkwardly big case Bose’s original true wireless earbuds, the SoundSport Free, sounded fantastic but were foiled by connectivity problems and audio / video sync issues that the company never fully resolved. They still sound terrific — and now, they’ve got ANC.
Anker doesn’t exactly have a phone of its own to sell alongside its Liberty line of earbuds, so its strategy is to deliver desirable features at a competitive price. Fit is extremely important in earbuds, not only for ANC but also for the best sound quality experience, especially in the lower frequencies.
A worthy Note successor that stands alone Phones in a flagship lineup have come to feel like variations on a theme. Features, screen size, and cost all increase in increments as you go up the chain, but you’re more or less getting the same phone in three different flavors. Maybe more phone makers will follow Samsung’s lead.
And it checks a lot of other boxes, too The HyperX new Cloud II Wireless headset is made for people who want simple controls, barely-there comfort, and solid sound quality. If you’re shopping around for a headset, sound quality and comfort are among the biggest reasons to spring for the Cloud II. surround sound mode.
V-Moda’s first noise-canceling headphones are built well and have balanced sound, but they fall short on features Apple’s AirPods Max just might have ushered in a new norm of $500-plus wireless headphones. Out of the box with EQ settings left untouched, the M-200 ANCs have an extremely neutral sound profile.
Beats says it has put an incredible amount of work into how the Studio Buds sound. Both the earbuds and case now natively appear in Android’s Bluetooth settings, where you can see their battery status or see the location where they were last paired to your phone. Now onto the sound. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge.
