I was captivated by Chris Alexander 's story about participatory online/onsite efforts at the San Jose Museum of Art (SJMA). They created a quirky video promoting the postcard project, put it on YouTube (the video shown at top), and waited for the postcards to roll in. Overall, the museum received about 250 postcards.

In these conversations, people often say, "don't expert voices matter?" Museums should feel protective of the expertise reflected in their staff, exhibits, programs, and collections. It lets you be the only expert with a voice. Single voices represented on single labels is not scalable. and my emphatic response is YES.

Anna had been the founding Curator of Education at the National Building Museum, led the Rolling Rainforest project, and was a real innovator in developing in-depth participatory design experiences with community members (though I wouldn't have used those words at the time). There is lots of room for new voices online.

When you want visitors to spend a long time reflecting and sharing their thoughts, you need to design spaces for response that are comfortable and minimize distractions. By simplifying and personalizing the design technique used for the institutional voice, visitors felt like they were part of a natural conversation with the institution.

The resulting (real) exhibits are high-quality experiences that reflect a level of creativity that could not have resulted from our scant in-house exhibit development staff. One of the exhibits features video of original paintings being created. We inspired a community and got real results.
