[Editor's note: the following is an excerpt from the 2011 Nonprofit SocialNetworking Benchmark Report , sponsored by NTEN , CommonKnowledge , and Blackbaud. It turns out that nonprofits of all sizes are able to scale their fundraising efforts on commercial socialnetworks.
A new study of 244 nonprofit participants by Avectra and NTEN show that nonprofit organizations are either tracking a lot of engagement metrics ranging from email open rates to activity on Facebook or don’t do it all. Check out some of the highlights in their infographic based on survey data.
Or you may use a sector wide benchmarking study such as the NTENSocialNetworking Benchmarking Study. But if you are working with a network of similar nonprofits, doing a more formal benchmarking study can offer a lot of benefits. To date the survey has received 131 responses; 45% projects and 55% organizations.
For example, you could collect number of fans or the post to like or commenting ratio – without having to survey other organizations. If you wanted to gather information that isn’t publically available, you could collect useful data points in a survey using a free tool like Google Forms.

It turns out that nonprofits of all sizes are able to scale their fundraising efforts on socialnetworks. The 2011 Nonprofit SocialNetwork Benchmark Report found that 30% of Master Fundraisers – those that brought in more than $100,000 – were small organizations and a further 8% were medium-sized.
Our pals at NTEN have put together a survey to poll how nonprofits are using socialnetworking sites to increase their reach. Questions cover both external socialnetworking efforts using sites like Twitter and Facebook to internal socialnetworks that your organization may have created yourself (like a community forum).
Except the door you opened was to your socialnetwork space. Trying to raise money, you increase your socialnetworking, adding that responsibility to one of your employees, one who is paid with grant funds. What part of socialnetworking can be charged to program funds? Close the door! Not really.
