Blackbaud, NTEN and Common Knowledge just released the fourth annual 2012 Nonprofit SocialNetworking Benchmark Report. We learned a lot of things, but one prevailing theme stood out — despite limited budgets and staffing, nonprofits continue to find great value in their fast-growing socialnetworks.

One of my biggest takeaways from last year's Nonprofit Technology Conference (NTC) in San Francisco was this oft-repeated advice on socialnetworking, specifically Facebook and Twitter: you can't make them come to you. Socialmedia became another place to tell our story, to engage readers and attract new supporters.
Nonprofit organizations are increasingly adopting socialnetworking tools to create a sense of community among members and donors. Although these statistics reinforce nonprofit's acceptance of socialmedia, the numbers do not show whether organizations have adopted internal or external tools. .
Bottom line – nonprofits are having some success in connecting with new constituents and generating action, but the socialnetwork works best when requiring a low level of commitment. Causes and associations provide status updates on the networks, post links, publish content via tools like Facebook Notes, groups on Linked In and Facebook, and ask questions on all of the services.
