And then there's that moment at NTC when we do finally meet — and it's remarkable.

This year’s Day of Service featured three different projects – a computer recycling project and installation of a wireless network in Washington, DC’s largest homeless shelter and meal preparation at DC Central Kitchen. Approximately 100 volunteers participated in service activities.

The big takeaway for me from the Creating a Culture of Storytelling session at NTC was that organizations can very easily do more to tell their stories, and this act alone could be the most important thing nonprofits do to gain donors, supporters, and relevance.

I usually come away from the NTC with one theme that is connected to multiple sessions. This first connection came up for me in the panel I organized on storytelling for movement building. This conversation also led to a discussion about the role of anonymity in community and storytelling.

One of the case studies I shared was about NTEN’s recent social fundraiser to raise scholarship money for NTC conference attendance. They set up a c ommunity champions campaign on Razoo and asked their champions to commit to raising $500 each and that the money would be matched by the NTEN board.
