After catching up on our email and our sleep post-2012 NTC, we started reading blog posts from attendees and speakers, and we've been amazed by the insights and ideas you all took away from the conference this year! One of my biggest takeaways from last year's Nonprofit Technology Conference (NTC) in San Francisco was this oft-repeated advice on socialnetworking, specifically Facebook and Twitter: you can't make them come to you. Social media, indeed. So we're bringing what we do best to new audiences on socialnetworking sites.

I am the director of a non-profit that promotes open museum practices, and we are in midst of launching a free service for arts organizations: a web site that permits any museum to create a participatory exhibit space and socialnetwork centered on the museum's collections. It takes content, strategy and elbow grease.
Social Media and socialnetworks allow for the quantum effects, paired elements at a distance. And another multiplier comes from Network Theory (not Einstein directly but building on physics and mathematics) which shows that a network strength is in its Weak ties / Loose connections.

Doug mentioned attending the NTC/NTEN conference in New Orleans and had RSS and Tagging ringing in his ears. He came back an evangelist for social media. I suspect the issue of socialnetworking - just say no without feeling pushed. Speaking with an authentic voice on behalf of your organization - where is the line between personal/professional networking and being a spokesperson for your organization on a socialnetworking site. We've always done search ads, blogger outreach, and posts on our socialnetworking profiles, but this year, I was ready to take it to the next level. I wanted to make this a social conference. We will be launching the full version of the site in March at NTC, at a hackathon we are co-producing with Code for America. This is an astonishing technology for good in which large numbers of ordinary people analyze photos of cells cultures to identify irregular shaped cancer cell cores.
