A key value of following the NpTech Tag stream, even though it is undifferiented is for finding or identifying patterns. There is a lot to be learned about our respective tagging behaviors and who contributes to the NpTech Tag stream and why. Is that a formalized taxonomy or not? A sort of "digg" for NpTech Tag items.

How are they different from taxonomies? Gavin's post does a great job explaining the definitions and the advantages of a taxonomy over a folksonomy. social network and community sites. The new generation of social web sites coming online are only beginning to understand how to organize and present this content to users.

The NPTech tag is used on del.icio.us It started right when these sites had just started, and it arose from the need to develop a nonprofit technology taxonomy. The idea was to tell people to tag with nptech everything that is relevant and then look to see what was being tagged to see how the tags were being used.

People who can touch API's out there have been fooling around with trying to extract data from the NpTech tag for analysis as well as think about ways that we can make the data that has been tagged more filtered via social search, collaborative filtering, and whatever else. With NTEN''s website redesign project underway, we took a step back and asked, "How do we know how our users use our site and what they want if we don''t ask? First the good: While there’s definite improvements to be made, NTEN’s existing site does have clean appearance that is fairly simple to use. The site is really hard to navigate.

Marnie Webb introduced the nptech tag to help aggregate nonprofit technology content. Nptech resources can be found on delicious , flickr , slideshare , and Twitter. Peter Campbell leveraged RSS to pull the tagged items into nptech. A Drupal or Wordpress site could include these features by adding modules/plug-ins/widgets.
