My feeling from watching the conversations within the NTEN community is that people DO understand the acquisition costs of FOSS software.
During the past two weeks, links shared via the #nptech hashtag on Twitter have been like a Chinese buffet, a huge selection of tempting dishes that look so good you want to fill an entire plate. And because you probably can't eat that much - unless, of course, you're Joey Chestnut - you put many small samples on your plate instead.
Over the last few years, NTEN has been working with nonprofits to understand how to better wrangle all the data they’re creating and what’s available to them into improved results: more mission impact. In 2010, we organized an online workshop we affectionately titled “Taming the Data Monster.”
NTEN, the Nonprofit Technology Network, puts on a massive, be-there-or-be-square conference for nonprofit professionals every year (in 2009, we met in San Francisco). But, if you don’t want to wait until April to dive into the knowledge and expertise in the NTEN network, you don’t have to!
Many of the species started down the nptech path from very surprising (and accidental) origins. After reading the Connected Cause blog post Top 5 Things Accidental Techies Need to Know Right Now , I shared it in the NTEN Accidental Techies Community of Practice and asked what happy accidents brought people to their jobs in the first place.
Rather than list off the top things you can do to raise money and spread your money right now, we decided to instead put our money where our mouth is - quite literally - and make a concerted effort to help the entire nptech community by raising money online for scholarships to none other than the 2009 NTC Conference in San Francisco.
