There’s always great information in the newsletter, but this time around I’m particularly excited because the focus is social networking for non-profits (something that, if you read this blog regularly, you know I’m very passionate about) and the 2011 Social Networking Survey. The last time I saw him was in 2009 in San Francisco at the NTC. I just learned that Rob passed away , leaving behind a wife and two daughters. Finally, I was lucky enough to attend my first “roundup” in 2001 in Denver as the NTC was called in those days. That’s where I met Holly Ross. Rob was the godfather.

Now day’s every conference you go to has a HUGE social media focus. Just like direct mail, email isn’t going away just because some new thing called social media came along. Don’t let it go to pot because of all your focus on social media or mobile. Hopefully they’ll spark your thinking and motivate you to try a few new things.
During the past two weeks, links shared via the #nptech hashtag on Twitter have been like a Chinese buffet, a huge selection of tempting dishes that look so good you want to fill an entire plate. On Friday, I tripped down the rabbit hole of Google + field test with many other social media early adopters and nonprofit technology (#nptech folks) who were kicking the tires. Google + is Google’s new social sharing platform. I found it overwhelming! And that’s why it is critical to be strategic.

Every year, the NTEN community comes together to raise enough money to send staff from small nonprofits to the NTC. The silliness is, of course, a means to an end: creating a community devoted to transforming technology into social change. The NTC is a huge part of that. We've raised nearly $5,000 so far.
