Organizations like yours are increasingly realizing that technology adoption is only as good as the technology you choose. Statistics from a 2014 NTEN study show that seriously investing resources in training for your staff corresponds to higher adoption and ultimately technology effectiveness.
The Technology Association of Grantmakers 2024 State of Philanthropy Tech Survey highlights both progress and ongoing challenges in how funders are supporting nonprofit technology needs. If these trends continue, we risk exacerbating existing inequities and undermining the capacity of nonprofits to fulfill their missions effectively.
It’s been a few days since I returned from the Nonprofit Technology Conference (#12NTC) hosted by NTEN in San Francisco, CA. You may have noticed: Social media seems to be the talk of nonprofits for the past few years. A quick scan of nonprofit-focused publications and websites, as well as the session topics at nonprofit conferences, will confirm that organizations are interested in how to use social media. NTEN published my somewhat snarky predictions for nonprofits' use of fundraising technologies in 2012. many nonprofits will struggle with out-of-date systems. My overall predictions are that most things will be pretty much the same as last year (and 2010 and 2009, etc.):
Did you know that small nonprofits have an average 1.26 IT staff members , and that larger nonprofits average 8.56 ? According to a 2012 infographic from NTEN , nonprofits have miniscule budgets when it comes to IT support and services, but realize the important role technology plays in their organization.

For the past three years, I’ve been a fundraising champion for NTEN, the premier organization for nonprofit techies. While I generally think vendor consolidation is bad for the nonprofit world (unless the vendor being absorbed wasn’t a strong player to begin with), I’m less concerned about the impact on small nonprofits. There are tons of choices out there for small and mid-sized organizations.

Over the last few years, NTEN has been working with nonprofits to understand how to better wrangle all the data they’re creating and what’s available to them into improved results: more mission impact. In 2010, we organized an online workshop we affectionately titled “Taming the Data Monster.”
Last week, during the quarterly staff retreat, NTEN staff toured Free Geek. Free Geek is a technology reuse, recycle, and education nonprofit based in Portland, Oregon. Several NTEN staff have been long-time supporters, and NTEN has always donated its old electronics to Free Geek.
