Blackbaud, NTEN and Common Knowledge just released the fourth annual 2012 Nonprofit Social Networking Benchmark Report. I recently got my copy of Measuring the Networked Nonprofit by Beth Kanter and Katie Delahaye Paine. One that really speaks to me is the point that “measurement helps nonprofits understand and improve their social networks.” Before I worked at NTEN, I managed the NetSquared program at TechSoup Global.
I just returned from the Nonprofit Technology Conference (#12NTC) hosted by NTEN in San Francisco, CA. Holly and the rest of the NTEN team (including all the volunteers) did an incredible job inspiring of over 1800 people for three days. Note from Beth: I’ve learned a lot about how to cultivate your professional network so it returns value by reading Porter Gale’s Your Network is Your Networth over the summer. It is about how you cultivate and develop your network. The other day I witnessed the result of feeding and tuning a network.
Bottom line – nonprofits are having some success in connecting with new constituents and generating action, but the social network works best when requiring a low level of commitment. Like other studies have noted, social networks like Facebook are not raising much money. hours per week on the social network.

The State of Nonprofit Data report was released this week (hat tip to Ted Fickes ). Idealware and NTEN prepared the report based on a survey in April 2012 with nearly 400 nonprofit organizations about how they manage and use data. The report found that nonprofits are either doing a lot with their metrics or not much at all.

ConnectVA partnered with NTEN in 2012 in launch a local club in Central VA.
