For many developers, including many of the projects we funded through NetSquared Challenges, the ultimate tool or application that was created was vastly different than the one they originally thought of or thought would work. We can’t only invest in a product. Instead, we should put the problems first and invest in a project.

As some of you know, part of my work is being the Community Builder for NetSquared , a project of Tech Soup that facilitates the adoption of social web tools by nonprofits and NGOs. Describing NetSquared events is difficult, because each one focuses on a different topic and has a unique flavor set by the organizing team. But did you know about NetSquared , our volunteer-driven network of in-person nonprofit technology training and peer support events? I’ve been following the work of Rob and his team closely as they have shown not just interest, but passion and intent for engaging with the community at large to create a tool that meets the needs of nonprofit organizations and keeps us involved in making the tool better and better.

I can’t speak for others working in the “innovation sector,&# but at NetSquared we can’t emphasize enough that our Community is what drives us – whether’s it’s online or offline. We are able to work as a small team on the organization side because of the passionate, collaborative, dedicated Community.
The goal of the project is to not simply host a contest, but "to help nonprofits think creatively about using technology to fulfill their missions, without having a fear of technology and by learning a new skill with an element of fun," says Susan Tenby, Director, Online Community and Social Media Team, TechSoup Global.
The organic conversation often highlights new ideas or examples that I otherwise would never know about, and can even generate new collaborations and projects by finding ways to team up. Below, I’ve shared my keynote remarks and slides and I hope you’ll share your ideas and further the conversation in the comments.
We put facebook back in it’s place as a tool, explain to our teams that we have a community engagement strategy that includes various kinds of community groups, various types of content, and will use multiple tools. The social period is a time when we start to relearn the separation between tactic and strategy.

Group members offered helpful suggestions for the team on ways to improve their site. The nights theme was Pimp My Nonprofit as the wonderful ladies from CODEPINK shared their website with the group. Jodie Evans, Dana Balicki, and Rae Abileah bravely put their CODEPINK website up to the scrutiny of some of DCs best online marketing minds.
The students then divided into teams based on their interest in the projects. NetSquared , an initiative from TechSoup Global, holds similar events all around the world to connect NGOs with the resources they need. NetSquared brings nonprofits together with programmers, designers, and other business professionals in their area.
There is major emphasis on what is possible when ingenuity, 11K gb internet connections and collaborative teams intersect. These folks bond indelibly in hack teams. A lot of them have teamed to create (or at least contemplate) a start-up. (In Mexico, donated and branded by Movistar). Like Maker’s Faires , people…create.
Every month, the NetSquared community comes together offline at Net Tuesday events to mix, swap stories and ideas, build new relationships, and collaborate.
