The NetSquared conference just wrapped up, and it was a lot of fun. Netsquared had picked 21 projects to run through two days of pitches concluding with voting from the attendees. I took lots of pictures, and they are posted on Flickr as the NetSquared collection. I love Freecycle!

Think of all the places your organization’s name, staff, projects, programs or focus area could come up in the news, in campaigns, or in online conversations. Here are some example searches using NetSquared as the organization. There are hundreds of millions of blogs according to Technorati, and that’s just blogs!
Ushahidi, an open source project originally deployed in Kenya to report post-election violence has since been downloaded and deployed for many other events and disasters, including Haiti, Chile, and Japan. Instead, we should put the problems first and invest in a project. We can’t only invest in a product. What do you have to share?

But did you also know that TechSoup’s NetSquaredproject supports nonprofit technology events and workshops happening in 50 cities across the globe? What Does a NetSquared Event Look Like? Each NetSquared group is run by volunteers who program events reflecting the unique needs of their community. It’s easy!
In the beginning, TechSoup’s Marnie Webb, Daniel Ben-Horin, and Billy Bicket created NetSquared to "remix the web for social change." To get going, they built the first NetSquared website using open-source Drupal. The NetSquared website was itself designed to be a model Web 2.0 " The year was 2005.
Each month, the NetSquared community (a project of TechSoup Global) meets up offline at NetSquared Local events around the world to discuss ideas, meet new people, and work together to make social change. Recently, many of these NetSquared Local meetings are being streamed live on the Internet via livestream or online recording.

It isn’t right for every project or process and is often not right for every organization. It is important to have a plan for each and an understanding of what your messaging is for both segments, but that doesn’t mean every project you do is a hybrid. NetSquared Challenges (slide 27) – [link].
There are lots of examples of projects that use crowdsourcing, even this one! Their hesitancy may come from not knowing what crowdsourcing means or how it works: so show them examples, but also show how the project you are working on could benefit from crowdsourcing and how the elements of crowdsourcing align with your project goals.
I am completely overwhelmed by the positive, kind, touching things that so many community members have shared about the work we have all done together during my time with NetSquared and TechSoup Global over the last two and a half years. A few years ago, Jeff and I went on a pro bono IT consulting project to Uganda to serve a Action for Children, an NGO that fights poverty by preserving families and delivering micro-finance.
