TechSoup Global and NetSquared attended hackathons across the country—from Hawaii to Vermont—that tackled local, statewide, and national civic issues. For example, Code for Oakland hosted an event called ReWrite Oakland, which focused how to make the Oakland city government website more accessible and easier to use.

He's currently working on an event planner module, which I can see being a huge asset for nonprofits or community organizers, such as organizers of our NetSquared groups. The last app demo was from a former TechSouper, Sameer Siruguri, who is currently developing an app for an Oakland nonprofit, Youth ALIVE! Reporting Problems.

The same people who produced "Going Within", 49th Parallel Productions , have also created Not Just a Number , a community journalism project for The Oakland Tribune which focuses on the topic of violence and violence prevention. Last year Oakland's homicide rate reached a five-year high of 148 people.

My group started out by considering Crowdmap (from NetSquared alumnus Ushahidi ), but ended up going with Google Fusion and Google Maps to create the project. I also discovered that I could provide the perspective of the end-user — the volunteer or activist who was actually going to be using the app in the field. "Keep it simple!"

And as Britt said, I also am the Art and Media Director at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights , which is based out of Oakland. The homicide rate, as people are probably aware of, has just really increased in the last few years in Oakland, where I live. So we started in our small apartment in Oakland, it was about 750 square feet.
