This post is the third and final in a series of reactions to Blueprint , a book chronicling the rise and fall of the Dutch Museum of National History (INNL) in 2008-2011. The Vending Machine project was one of my favorites; you can learn more about it here. But the National Vending Machine, as most of INNL’s projects, is a prototype.

Blueprint is the story of a group of people who tried to create a Dutch Museum of National History (INNL). The root of my frustration with the book is not that the project never came to fruition.

The First Wave includes 6 museums, 5 performing arts organizations, 3 public libraries, 3 parks, and 3 community centers. OF/BY/FOR ALL is one of many projects in a growing ecosystem of efforts to propel more inclusive institutions. Some are funding projects. Half are led by people of color or indigenous people.

In the Netherlands, State Secretary for Culture Halbe Zijlstra slashed 200 million euros from the national budget for the arts, leading to the close of the innovative National History Museum project and crippling many superbly inventive and inspiring organizations like Mediamatic and the Waag Society.

The new building of Naturalis, the Dutch National Natural History Museum, opened in 1998. One group of participants thought up a museum based on 12 boats, 11 traveling around the Netherlands and one in the dock for refitting. Naturalis will give the public an active role. Projects design guestpost.
