The new music controls in Android 11. Android has long allowed music and podcast apps to place custom, themed controls into notifications. Right now, I’m in the process of reviewing both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Microsoft Surface Duo. Photography by Dieter Bohn / The Verge. Image: Google.
Those differences did not stop me from enjoying the music coming out of the Echo, however, whether that was the acoustic home recordings on the recent rerelease of Tom Petty’s Wildflowers ; the driving, harmonized guitar riffs on Spirit Adrift’s Enlightened In Eternity ; or the ambient Tycho beats I typically listen to while working.
On top of the mini is the only interface on the device itself, a flat plastic touch-sensitive pad that you can use to invoke Siri, play or pause music, or adjust volume. It will glow white when music is playing or green when you’re using the mini as a speakerphone for calls. HomePod mini sound quality.
And aside from a few tweaks Sony made to how it upscales music, the 1000XM4s sound just like their predecessors — a very good thing, trust me. The detection works really well; music stops even if I say one short word. If you don’t do anything, the music will return 30 seconds after speech stops. Let’s get to the new stuff.
Some people will like that they won’t have to worry about missing travel announcements or someone trying to speak to them nearby, but I’m more of a tune-out-everything-else person when I listen to music. It’s not a constant source of frustration, but it happens with more frequency than other earbuds I’ve reviewed lately.
They practically make the ambient sounds in my local coffee shop go poof, and while visiting family upstate over Memorial Day, I tested them in a crowded bar and found that I could listen to my music at around 60 percent volume without hearing any of the lively chatter surrounding me.
Additionally, the Nest Audio sounds good at lower volumes, which is nice when I just want some background music while I’m working or during dinner. Obviously, the Nest Audio is louder and sounds better than the Nest Mini and is the better choice for frequently listening to music.
My $799 review unit has the Ryzen 5-4500U, along with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. There, you can swap between presets for Music, Movie, and Voice, as well as equalizer settings for different tunes. Reviews of budget and midrange laptops are often a question of what you’re trading off for that lower price point.
In fact, my review unit clattered on to my hardwood floor enough times that it eventually developed a crack on the rear glass. Instead of fighting a losing computational photography battle against other smartphones, Sony is taking the fight back to its home turf: the Alpha camera line. It starts with a gigantic 1/1.7-inch
The buttons are mushy, which I can understand since that means they don’t click loudly as you’re listening to music. The music control buttons can be a little cumbersome. I also tested them wired with my Apple Lossless files and streaming Amazon Music HD, and the M-200 ANCs proved wonderfully layered and rich.
The oval charging case is mercifully way smaller than the giant one that holds the Powerbeats Pro, and the red color of my review unit is quite eye-catching. Another annoyance is that these buds don’t have any kind of sensors to detect when they’ve been removed from your ears, so music won’t pause automatically.
For this review, I’ll keep it simple and focus on speakers that resemble the Roam in size. I’ve also managed to drop my two review units a few times, and they’ve come away with only light blemishes and a couple nicks you really have to hunt for to notice. Auto Trueplay works with music both streamed over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.).
It will play music from Amazon Music and won’t allow explicit tracks. Photography by Dan Seifert / The Verge. The Kids Plus service on the Echo Show is similar to what’s available on Amazon’s Fire HD Kids Edition tablets. It also removes certain features like smart home controls from the Show’s touch interface.
As with the Beats X, you can magnetically attach them together — and this time, your music will automatically pause whenever you do so. Battery life for the Beats Flex is estimated at “up to 12 hours” of continuous listening, and that seems on point in my time reviewing them so far. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge.
Also, this is minor, but it’s something I really appreciated: the app doesn’t auto-pause your music or podcasts, so you can keep listening to your jams while flying. It’s a nice change of pace to my overall approach that I wasn’t expecting when I started my review. Photography by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge.
There’s no way to pause music with the earbuds right now; all you can do is double-tap to skip to the next song or hold down for three seconds to switch between synced devices. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge. During my time testing the OnePlus Buds so far, I’ve been unable to do much with the tap controls on each side.
Sound bleed is easily canceled out by everyday street noise, but if you’re inside with the volume turned up, people nearby will be able to tell that you’re listening to music. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge. It’s there and perceptible. These are sunglasses, after all, so I imagine those situations will be few and far between.
It also has twice as much storage (8GB) for saving music playlists directly to the watch. If it feels like I spent the majority of this review comparing how the Galaxy Watch 3 is different or the same as prior watches. Photography by Dan Seifert / The Verge. One of the preinstalled watchfaces on the Galaxy Watch 3.
There are two versions of the Fairphone 4 available: one with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (the model I’ve been using for this review) and a step-up version with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which retails for €649 / £569. Photography by Jon Porter / The Verge. It’s a decent €200 phone that happens to be priced at €579.
Music also automatically pauses when an earbud is removed.). I didn’t see any need to switch those up, but you can set them to whatever you want in the Bose Music app. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge. You can double tap on the left earbud to switch between three “favorite” levels of noise cancellation.
They reliably resumed the music whenever I put them back in my ears. Usually, there’s one genre or even a style of music production that will expose the weaknesses of a particular set of earbuds, but I struggled to find that with the ComfoBuds Pro. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge.
The Chromebook delivered decent volume — certainly enough to fill a room — but percussion was tinny as I listened to music, and you can forget about bass entirely. Photography by Monica Chin / The Verge. The Spin comes with two stereo speakers, as well as two microphones. I also heard some occasional distortion at maximum volume.
The person in charge of The Verge’s reviews program, Dan Seifert, does not. Not that it really matters; I’ve yet to deplete the battery on my review table since I first set it outside over a week ago. My review unit is a near-final version of the device that is scheduled to ship in August (to the US only). I want a Suntable.
Music is full-bodied regardless of whether you’re playing a pop-filled running playlist or something quieter. Music will automatically pause when you remove an earbud, and I didn’t notice any audio sync issues when watching videos across several devices. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge.
Note: Because of the way Fitbit structured the embargo on reviews, I had far less time to test than would be ideal for this kind of device (just five days). We may update this review down the road if longer-duration testing proves to garner important insights. Photography by Brent Rose for The Verge. Yeah, I do.
Perhaps most surprising is that Sony also includes its higher-quality LDAC codec among the speaker’s features, allowing you to play music at higher bitrates from services like Amazon Music, Apple Music, Tidal, Qobuz, and others that offer lossless audio. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge.
Except for the dials along the perimeter, the entire surface area of either ear cup can be tapped to pause or play music, skip tracks, and answer calls. But if you’re super particular about balancing your music with the outside world, there’s no getting more granular than this. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge.
Animoto enables users to turn their photos, video clips, and music into videos that can be uploaded to YouTube and shared on the Social Web. That said, you should also monitor this site (and others like it) for the rare rogue review. The design is slick, the functionality is cutting-edge, and the reviewers are raving.
separate input and output audio jacks, and an SD card reader (though that reader was frustratingly slow according to reviewers ). I ran into a number of bugs with the last MSI product I reviewed, the GE66 Raider, but I’m happy to report that they all seem to have been fixed. Photography by Monica Chin / The Verge.
In the right ways, they still sound like AirPods, and they’re tuned to work equally well for music, watching videos, podcasts, games, and so on. But Apple says music is still far and away the leading thing people use their AirPods for, so it’s trying to deliver the best audio quality possible in this form factor.
I’ve been using the Emberton nonstop since I got a review unit to test, and it easily hit the 20-hour lifespan claim when it was piping out music at medium volume. It’s reminiscent of leveling up in Call of Duty , and that’s a vibe that’s incongruous with the kind of music I usually like to listen to.
All of these headphones now do a tremendous job of quieting your surroundings and putting you in a private bubble with your music, podcasts, movies, or whatever else you’re using them for. It would’ve been nice to see some EQ options in the Bose Music app. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge.
And once we all return to offices, you’ll have to ignore nearby conversations cutting into your music. You can tap twice on either earbud to pause or play music. With these, there’s no ear detection, and the music just keeps going. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge. There’s nothing subtle about the Surface Earbuds.
Unlike AirPods Pro or Bose’s QuietComfort Earbuds, these noise-canceling buds can pair with two devices at once Over the last several years, Jabra’s true wireless earbuds have consistently earned positive reviews and are often at the top of recommendation lists for people who aren’t interested in Apple’s AirPods.
Music sounded good, and the 3D feature made a noticeable difference. Photography by Monica Chin / The Verge. Dell has also placed speaker grilles on each side of the keyboard. There are two tweeters in the base.) The keys are snappy. It’s just not perfect yet.
In the preloaded Dolby Access app, you can also switch between presets for music, gaming, movies, etc. I wish this review could stop there. Reviewers throw this phrase around to describe all kinds of laptops, but it’s very true here: in attempting to be a jack of all trades, this laptop is a master of none.
We haven’t yet gotten to review the 3080 model of the Scar, but the frame rates other reviews have reported are better than, but not worlds away from what I’m seeing here — and the Scar is almost $1,000 more. Photography by Monica Chin / The Verge. The speakers and microphone support two-way AI noise cancellation.
So instead, I’m going to use this review to explore two questions that concern the future of the luxury laptop market — questions the Vaio Z is setting out to answer: one, is contoured carbon fiber the future? Sturdiness and rigidity are difficult claims to verify with a review unit for obvious reasons. And two, can a 2.32-pound
Music can be said to be the universal language: while our tastes in tunes may differ, there are few people who don’t have their own favorite songs to listen to. New technologies have increased the quality of that music — however, we can’t all afford the types of speakers and headphones that offer the most superior sound.
Animoto enables users to turn their photos, video clips, and music into videos that can be uploaded to YouTube and shared on the Social Web. That said, you should also monitor this site (and others like it) for the rare rogue review. The design is slick, the functionality is cutting-edge, and the reviewers are raving.
If it is playing music, a video, a recipe, or any other ongoing thing, it will continue to rotate itself automatically as you move around the room. Thanks to that new three-speaker system, the Echo Show 10 does sound good for listening to music. Photography by Dan Seifert / The Verge. Perhaps I’ll wait for Alexa’s next move.
At the entry level, you’ve got the Elite 3 that I reviewed in September, a no-frills set of earbuds that nail the basics for $80. It’s still somewhat rare to find buds that can connect to two devices at once, which allows you to seamlessly take phone calls while listening to music or watching a video on your laptop, for example.
You can swipe right from the watchface to access basic widgets for music control, weather, and activity tracking, similar to Wear OS or a Samsung watch. I asked a few other reviewers I know who are also testing the OnePlus Watch and each one has had the same issues with inaccurate step counting.
