A few years and a few hundred open mics into that experience, it became obvious that some venues fostered amazing poetry communities, others, not so much. One of my favorite open mics was at the Cantab in Cambridge, MA. Compare that with any number of lousy open mics. The process is incredibly open and equal.

They are soliciting project proposals for innovative forms of audience engagement. The strongest proposals will be wholly original and theoretically grounded. Proposals are due by February 5, 2015. In Spanish, they are using the word "Publico," which refers more broadly to public/s. The theme this year is "audiences."

In the Netherlands, State Secretary for Culture Halbe Zijlstra slashed 200 million euros from the national budget for the arts, leading to the close of the innovative National History Museum project and crippling many superbly inventive and inspiring organizations like Mediamatic and the Waag Society. Well, they only cost me $8 apiece.
