The combination of Sony’s trademark 21:9 aspect ratio with a slightly smaller 6.1-inch Given Sony’s photography ambitions for the 5 II, I’ll allow it the physical shutter control, but the Google Assistant button feels unnecessary — especially in a position that’s too low to be convenient to press.
Cowboy, maker of some of our favorite pedal-assisted electric bikes, is back with two new models for 2021. But this year’s model has a redesigned 250W rear-hub motor that remains silent as it assists riders up to a max speed of 25km/h (15.5mph), even though it’s smaller and produces noticeably more torque. Image: Cowboy.
To that end, it shared a bunch of models that Nvidia has tested internally and confirm provide a good experience. Note: the asterisk denotes models where Nvidia says voice chat isn’t recommended). It has a beautiful 2400 x 1600 resolution 3:2 aspect ratio display that still looks fantastic today, and it meets the 4GB RAM requirement.
The 16:10 aspect ratio gives you an extra bit of vertical space, in addition to space on the sides. The more impressive aspect of this screen, though, is that Dell has managed to fit it into a chassis that’s smaller than those of most 17-inch laptops and a decent number of 15-inch models as well. It has a 93.7 It’s compact (14.74
Both Pro models come in 13.3-inch These devices look and feel pretty similar to the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360 models we reviewed last year. The 360 model is, as you’d anticipate, a bit heavier.). The primary chassis update is that all the new models feature 1080p webcams. The devices will start at $1,049.99
In addition to that peak luminance of 2000 nits, or 2000 cd/m² , Samsung says it boosted the amount of local dimming zones to 2,048 compared to just 10 in last year’s model. It retains the same 240Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time of last year’s model — no quibbles there. Photography by Cameron Faulkner / The Verge.
The OLED configuration costs exactly the same as an identically specced non-OLED 4K model ($1,699.99), and $300 more than an identically specced FHD touchscreen model. It’s a 3.5K (3456 x 2160) panel with a claimed 100,000:1 contrast ratio. It’s not as bright as the FHD model but is still plenty bright, maxing out at 369 nits.
The HP Spectre line is second to none when it comes to design, and this latest model is no exception. The new model has a 3:2 display, which is 13 percent taller than the 16:9 panel on last year’s device. It’s kept the same 90 percent screen-to-body ratio.). A few months ago, Lenovo told me that much of its portfolio would be moving to the 16:10 aspect ratio this year. Across the board, the new models are 16:10 — taller and roomier than they were in their 16:9 eras. Both lines have 14-inch and 16-inch models. Photography by Monica Chin / The Verge. And here’s the new T16.
An intriguing midrange option is the base model, which gives you a Core i5, 8GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage for $899.99. Acer claims an 84 percent screen-to-body ratio, a slight improvement from the Swift 3 I reviewed earlier this year (82.73 There are a few questions I’m eager to answer with the final model. First: cooling.
This model, which starts at $699, really blurs the latter line. Next to last year’s model, this one has a sleeker and chicer vibe. A big part of that is the display: the 2020 Envy has an 88 percent screen-to-body ratio, compared to 79 percent on last year’s model. Photography by Monica Chin / The Verge.
There are two 8K models: the QN900A (a successor to last year’s top-tier 8K QLED with barely there bezels) and the QN800A. There’s a new “game bar” with quick access to settings like refresh rate, aspect ratio, and so on. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge. All of the HDMI 2.1
The XPS 15’s base model starts at $1,299 and includes a Core i5-10300H, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, Intel UHD graphics, and a 1920 x 1200 display. This model is really for anyone who just wants to browse; if you need any sort of computing power, you’ll want to spring for the i7. I tested a midrange model that currently costs $2,253.
More good stuff, same light weight I’ve read plenty about what it’s like to use, hold, and type on an LG Gram before, but that didn’t take away from the impressive first impression it made when I used the new Gram 17 for the first time — especially this larger model. Lastly, the large trackpad isn’t always good at palm rejection.
A convertible laptop for ThinkPad fans You could line up most ThinkPad models of the past few years and the average laptop buyer might have difficulty telling the difference between them. The base model has an MSRP of $1,819 but is currently listed at $1,091. Photography by Monica Chin / The Verge. and $1,399.99 respectively.
Samsung’s Galaxy Chromebook, Asus’ Chromebook Flip C436, and many of last year’s top contenders like the Pixelbook Go all used a 16:9 aspect ratio — a more square 3:2 screen is taller and gives you significantly more vertical space. The model I tested, which costs $629, has a Core i5-10210U processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.
Acer’s model is thinner than both of these devices at 0.61 If you’re looking for an affordable Netflix machine, the Spin is a great candidate — especially given its movie-friendly 16:9 aspect ratio. Some models will support LTE connectivity, though my test unit did not. Photography by Monica Chin / The Verge.
The 16:9 aspect ratio is fine when the screen is in landscape, but becomes awkwardly tall and long in portrait mode. The model I’ve been able to try out is the mid-tier version with a 10th Gen Core i3 processor and 4GB of RAM. Photography by Dan Seifert / The Verge.
The base model includes a Core i3-1115G4, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, Intel’s UHD integrated graphics, and a 1920 x 1200 non-touch display. Models with those graphics start at $1,099.99 ($1,077.99 Models with those graphics start at $1,099.99 ($1,077.99 model with 32GB of RAM, 2TB of storage, and a 3840 x 2400 touchscreen.
Additionally, it uses a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is falling out of fashion among premium business laptops for a reason — it’s cramped for multitasking purposes. Both the material and the click feel a bit plasticky compared to what you might find in a nicer model. Photography by Monica Chin / The Verge.
Meanwhile, computational photography is great, but there’s only so much it can do — stacking a few images to get better dynamic range or depth information is good, but you reach a point of diminishing returns pretty quickly. Unfortunately, sensors can’t get much bigger because they’d need bigger lenses to match.
This isn’t the first time that Maingear has co-opted an Intel white label laptop, either; Maingear’s Element is the company’s spin on the previous NUC model that was more gaming-focused. The model that I tested has 2TB of NVMe storage and 16GB of RAM, costing $1,849. Maingear isn’t the only company getting a NUC M15 to call its own.
inch Tab S7 Plus — to more squarely compete with Apple’s two iPad Pro models. They have incredible displays, fast performance, and far fewer bugs and issues than last year’s model. In terms of hardware, there’s very little to complain about with either model. The Tab S7 starts at $649.99, while the Tab S7 Plus commands $849.99.
The newest Chromebook Spin 713 is just as good as last year’s model Acer has made three significant upgrades to the best-in-class Chromebook Spin 713. But my favorite aspect of this display (and of this Chromebook as a whole) is the 3:2 aspect ratio. Another strength (which Acer has strengthened with this model) is the port selection.
Couple that with a $1,499 starting price (our model currently goes for $1,699), and you’re looking at a pretty niche target demographic. LG hasn’t reinvented the wheel; the 2020 Gram 17 is largely an iterative update to the 2019 model. LG has removed a large, visible hinge that made last year’s model look a bit chunky.
Version three, like the previous model, also has integrated lighting, with a rear light that flashes red when braking. As for the ride, Cowboy’s own silent 250W rear-hub motor coupled with a new, longer-lasting Gates Carbon Belt drive and lower gear ratio produces a highly intuitive experience.
OLED panels have unbeatable contrast ratios, combining the blackest possible blacks with the whitest possible whites. On top of that, there’s a model with a Core i7-1165G7, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage for $1,099.99. Choose a white or a dark model. Photography by Monica Chin / The Verge. Dell XPS 13 OLED.
US residents who like what they’re seeing here and don’t want to import a device can get the Slim 7 with an eight-core Ryzen 7 4700U for $899.99 — that model is linked below. What did hinder it was the 16:9 aspect ratio, which just feels really cramped for multitasking — especially if you’ve used a 16:10 or 3:2 display before.
Starting with what’s new: the 16:10 aspect ratio is here. One interesting thing: the cheapest listed model (currently $1,493.40) is actually a Linux model. My test model (running Windows 10 Pro, not Linux) is listed at $2,315.28 X1 Yoga models with that processor start at $1,938. Photography by Monica Chin.
The model that I tested costs a whopping $3,999.99. Additionally, this Blade 17 showcases a couple of new form and function additions that are available in all of Razer’s 2022 models, like bigger keycaps and laser-cut speaker grilles. The Blade 17 starts at $2,699.99, but the model that I tested costs a whopping $3,999.99.
The base model, currently listed at $1,848.99 , comes with a quad-core Core i5-10210U, 128GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM; our test model, priced at $2,937, comes with a six-core Core i7-10810U, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. Photography by Monica Chin / The Verge. The model is priced at $2,937. We regret the error.
Notably, this is a 16:10 aspect ratio screen , and my eyeballs appreciate the luxury of having more stuff to look at without needing to scroll or resize windows to fit within view. There are a handful of recent gaming laptops that have the Legion 5 Pro beat with a thinner build — not that I’d call Lenovo’s 16-inch model thick, per se.
The battle between Intel and AMD continues Asus has so many ZenBook 14 models it stresses me out. Asus has managed to work the display into a chassis that doesn’t feel too much larger than that of most 13-inch rigs — there’s a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio, thanks to the thin (2.5mm) bezels on the sides of the display.
That means that you don’t need a separate case or housing to attach accessories, like you did with the Hero 7 and older models. You can change the screen ratio of the front screen, what information it displays, or toggle it on and off in the Hero 9’s menu. Photography by Becca Farsace / The Verge. inches diagonally.
That’s a $100 increase over last year’s model, and more than an iPhone 12 Pro Max ($1,199) or a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra ($1,249, but often on sale for less) with an equivalent 256GB of storage. Photography by Allison Johnson / The Verge. You won’t find that combination among the other big-name flagships on the market.
It has a generously sized Windows Precision trackpad, and its keyboard is just as delightful to type on as some of HP’s other recent models we’ve reviewed. Also, the ZBook’s OLED screen is a treat to look at, but I hope HP employs a taller 3:2 aspect ratio here next time, like it does with the Spectre X360 lineup.
Most of the models I tested max out at 1080p resolution, but we do have a couple of 4K picks as well. Then there’s the throw ratio, which is how big the image is in relation to how far it is from the surface. The best projector out of the models I tested — the one I’ll be recommending to my friends — is the $899 Epson 2150.
And I’m not a fan of its 16:9 aspect ratio — Chromebooks that use 3:2 or 16:10 displays are able to cram noticeably more screen real estate into a smaller chassis. The base model, currently listed at $334.99 , has an Intel Celeron 5205U processor (which is likely to be slow) and 32GB of storage, and the top $564.99 Glossy IPS finish.

And let’s get this out of the way: it is the best consumer drone for video and photography you can buy right now. If you buy the $4,999 Cine model, you get three batteries and plenty of flight time. It is also a 4:3 sensor, which means your photos are no longer in 3:2 aspect ratio.

Of the two models, the 20S is slightly more manageable to use. The $190 20SE has a 6.82-inch
