Mohammed Diop, of Mali , presumably one of the very people OLPC wants to convince: "It is a very clever marketing tool. And who needs libraries when we have Wikipedia and Kindles? " Who could argue with that? Under the guise of non-profitability hundreds of millions of these laptops will be flogged off to our governments.

At Geekcorps Mali, our approach was: through great engineering feats attempt to somehow lower the costs of access, while hopefully creating sustainable “business models” in the process. User fees -- necessary if you ever wished to achieve sustainability -- were always a struggle, as they often shut the desired audience out.
