But I must confess that I sometimes think that Facebook is overrated as a communications and community-building tool. That would be fine if the ROI was there, but even with over 7,000 fans ROI-as-defined-above is elusive. Very few new e-mail newsletter subscribers. community engagement, etc. Am I doing something wrong?

Some of the opinions I express below I have had for a while and speak to them in my webinars and trainings, but some are so recent that I am still in the stage of “Seriously Facebook? To question Facebook and it’s integrity, longevity and ROI [Return on Investment]. 3) Facebook ROI is limited and often over-rated.

A smartphone or tablet will be their primary tool. Beyond adding your nonprofit on the desktop site, most of the ROI from using Foursquare comes from using it on an iPhone, Android phone, or Blackberry. In the future you may be building you e-mail and mobile lists by simply bumping smartphones with supporters. Foursquare.

When it comes to email marketing, most nonprofits rely on buying mailing lists, and it has its own pros and cons. Host webinars to reach out to a new audience. Work on optimizing signup forms.
