Last week I designed and facilitated a day and half session for the Nonprofit Leadership Institute co-sponsored every year by Pepperdine University Nonprofit Management program and Ventura County Community Foundation. Certain room set ups encourage interaction between the participants and the workshop leader, others do not.
But, when considering helping young graduates transition to a career in nonprofit or even helping a mid-career professional make the leap from a for-profit vocation to one in the nonprofit sector, there are a few basics to keep in mind when mentoring a new nonprofit worker. In the for profit world, though, there’s more leadership development. Millennials come to the work place more prepared to teach than previous generations. The ability to teach, with patience, is essential. But finding a mentor and a champion, we were able to make things happen.

Millennials education teaches them to be the king of the castle, not the grunts to get the coffee. Babyboomers need to mentor these young people and treat them like equals, not grunts. Leadership comes from trusting people. Should that Millennial fail, teach them a learning lesson. They need a job. They get underpaid.
So, I thank my dad for teaching me the following business and life lessons : Listen - Growing up, I thought my Dad was perhaps shy or quiet. He loved even more to teach. Mentoring is equally powerful. Thank you, Dad, for teaching me these valuable lessons by setting such a good example. He loved to learn. I miss you.
