AMD continues to rip and tear — a familiar refrain for 2020’s laptops so far Dell’s G5 15 SE is focused. It’s not the best-looking gaming laptop or the fastest out there, but starting at $879.99, its AMD Ryzen processor and RX 5600M graphics chip make for a great tag team. This test proves that this processor rips and tears.
Asus is touting it as the world’s lightest 14-inch commercial laptop, and it is light. That means the ExpertBook isn’t the longest-lasting business laptop I’ve ever tested (the $3,000 Dell Latitude still holds that crown), but it’s certainly in the hall of fame. All this sounds great, so what’s the catch? My test unit is 2.19
Eileen on sound bites: “If you are watching an interview on TV and some brilliant sound bite rolls off the person’s tongue, chances are very high that did not happen by accident. Eileen on energy levels: “You want to change up the sound of your voice and the visual variety of the slides, so people stay with you. Shutterstock.
I’m not here to tell you that they are the future of computing or will replace your laptop for getting work done. This is a tablet you buy to watch video and read things, not to try to replace your laptop. The Tab A7’s display is great for watching movies and TV shows, and the four speakers put out surprisingly excellent sound.
Unfortunately, for many who have been suddenly thrown into this situation, the best space they have to work is on a small laptop at a dining room table. If you’re used to working at a desk with a large monitor, having to do the same job on a laptop at a table can be frustratingly confining. Photography by Dan Seifert / The Verge.
Both keyboards are designed to do the same thing: turn your Surface device into a traditional clamshell laptop. The hinges are stiff, so the tablet doesn’t move when you touch it or are using it on an unstable platform such as your lap, and they allow you to close it all up just like you would a standard laptop and throw it in your bag.
OLED panels — which made a name for themselves in high-end TVs but are growing more popular in laptops as well — can deliver a stunning picture compared to IPS LCD displays. But all those pixels suck up a heck of a lot of battery, and companies sometimes slap them on laptops that can’t fully fill their power needs. It’s just 2.65
Microsoft’s newest Surface Laptop brings better battery life and a better chip On paper, the Surface Laptop 4 is a Surface Laptop 3 with better chips. Sure, there are differences here and there: the Laptop 4 is ever-so-slightly thinner, and there’s a new “Ice Blue” color option. The big changes are on the inside.
The best laptop under $1,000 This year’s HP Envy x360 is a big deal. It’s easily the best laptop under $1,000 that you can buy right now. AMD processors have mostly been fodder for budget and midrange laptops for the past few years. pen, though there’s no place on the laptop itself to store it when not in use.

An unremarkable laptop with a remarkable chip AMD has started a laptop revolution. There’s no doubt about it: the Ryzen 4000 series has brought exceptional performance to midrange ultraportable laptops — performance that previously cost an arm and a leg. You can fold the laptop flat but not all the way around.
Functional but could be better This year, multiple companies primarily known for gaming laptops have been branching out into the portable business and productivity sector. The most appealing facets of the Summit-Series laptops are their look and build. I would expect more from a $1,249 laptop.
Perfection, for a price I have used a heck of a lot of laptops in the past year, and some of them are quite nice. But I’ve never touched a consumer laptop as gorgeous as the Spectre x360 14. as tested) the Spectre x360 is easily my new favorite 2-in-1 laptop. With a starting MSRP of $1,299.99 ($1,589.99
At its core, it’s a gaming laptop that plays games very well. Lenovo’s combo of a taller, high-resolution screen is what you’ll want in your next gaming laptop, even if you don’t know it yet. This laptop is full of other delights, like its TrueStrike keyboard.
And aside from a few tweaks Sony made to how it upscales music, the 1000XM4s sound just like their predecessors — a very good thing, trust me. This also lets you find your misplaced headphones by playing a sound through them, and you’ll get low-battery notifications when that 30-hour runtime is nearly exhausted. Look familiar?
In many cases, using the headphones you already love will also give you better sound quality than you’d get buying a single-purpose gaming headset. The older BoomPro used an omnidirectional mic, which allowed more ambient sound to come through. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge. USB-C adapters work fine too.
It’s more capable, too, operating with the aptX low latency (aptX LL) codec that delivers good-sounding audio with no perceivable lag. Using the receiver, the GTW 270 Hybrid can be especially great for fast-paced games where sound cues count for success; but really, it’s nice to have for any title. But the sound isn’t too compromised.
It’s made into more of a computer, able to do tasks that once were solely the domain of laptops. Apple wants to push the iPad into classrooms, and the idea of trying to hang on to dozens of Lightning headphones or Bluetooth headphones sounds like a nightmare. iPad things ought to involve using the same charger we use for our laptops.
The touchscreen, made of Corning Gorilla Glass 6, has a 3840 x 2400 resolution, one of the highest resolutions you’ll find on a consumer laptop. It’s all a joy to use, and I’m dreading going back to a laptop with a 16:9 panel. Music sounded good, and the 3D feature made a noticeable difference. It’s a world away from 16:9.
The lid, which had a red MSI logo on the GP65, is all black on the GP66, and the two raised ridges in the center of the GP65 that gave the laptop a distinctively “gamer” look are gone. That doesn’t mean this is the best-made laptop around. That’s dim, even for a mid-tier gaming laptop. Finally, on sound.
I was able to chat with my colleagues in Slack, compose articles in our CMS, browse Twitter, watch Doug DeMuro videos, and keep up with my RSS feed just like I do on a laptop every day of the week. The speakers are loud and sound great. There are four very loud, very nice-sounding speakers on the Tab S7 Plus (two on each side).
Plenty of power, with plenty of tradeoffs Gigabyte has released a minor refresh to the Aero 15 OLED, its flagship laptop targeting gamers and creative professionals. The fans are also very, very loud on Gigabyte’s Turbo Mode — someone walking by while I was running a video export asked if the laptop was going to take off.
Good sound quality and best-in-class noise cancellation come in an awkwardly big case Bose’s original true wireless earbuds, the SoundSport Free, sounded fantastic but were foiled by connectivity problems and audio / video sync issues that the company never fully resolved. They still sound terrific — and now, they’ve got ANC.
The 85t buds have a new chip dedicated to noise canceling, which allows them to cancel out a wider range of outside sounds than the 75t, where the ANC feature feels tacked on. Considering the differences in water resistance and sound quality, it’s not a straightforward answer. That’s also because of sound quality.
The UX425 is light for a 14-inch laptop at 2.49 percent less power than most laptop displays do. This is a clever idea (how often do you see a number pad on a 14-inch laptop?) The ZenBook does ship with a dongle, but the thought of having to take up a precious USB-C port to plug headphones into a laptop just makes me sad.
Aside from a few design issues, this is a buttoned-up gaming laptop For years, Razer has set the standard for making gaming laptops that are compact, slim, and feel great to use. It has one of the most generously sized trackpads I’ve ever used on a Windows laptop, similar to the one on MSI’s creator-focused Prestige 14.
Cutting through games like a hot Blade If you’re after a minimalist, dead-serious-looking gaming laptop, Razer’s Blade is still the one to get. Its aluminum-clad design looks more akin to Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 4 than a laptop that was made for gaming. Otherwise, this laptop is the physical manifestation of dark mode.
Photography by Cameron Faulkner / The Verge. Their design is understated, and the sound quality was better than I expected. At Amazon, you can get one of Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops at hundreds off the usual cost. Normally $199.99, this brings them down to $180.
The 4K streamer offers everything HDR (Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10), as well as Dolby Atmos sound, access to all major streaming apps, and an Alexa-enabled remote that lets you issue commands without having to shout across your living room. As far as specs go, the last-gen Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K checks all the boxes.
Once in a blue moon, Sony’s latest flagship wireless headphones with active noise cancellation and excellent sound see a deep discount. Photography by Cameron Faulkner / The Verge. It essentially provides a laptop-like experience, in case you’re trying to get more done and don’t want to lug around too many devices.
Photography studio. It now has the Surface Laptop Studio , too. For what it’s worth, I don’t think “studio” branding has been widely used to make computers sound more capable than they actually are. In comparison, I heard a lot about how “Studio” is a great word given Apple’s target audience. Music studio. Design studio.
Samsung’s latest tablets are saddled by familiar problems If you want to buy a tablet that can possibly replace your laptop, there are two options most people go for: Apple’s iPad Pro or Microsoft’s Surface Pro. Those on the other end of Zoom calls said I sounded muffled and distant, despite my ability to hear them perfectly fine.
As many gaming laptops are going thinner, this one is heavier and thicker than previous generations. And it’s a welcome return, even if this laptop won’t appeal to everyone. The new Strix G15 Advantage Edition looks more garish next to Alienware’s laptop, but it also has fast gaming performance and high-end features for a lower price.
The Elite Folio is a lightweight, leather-covered, convertible Windows laptop powered by a Snapdragon processor with Arm architecture. The Folio is a convertible laptop, but you have more than the usual tent, tablet, and clamshell options. I think this is the first laptop I’ve ever reviewed that I wish had slightly larger bezels.
Writing on it with the stylus feels basically the same as writing on a glossy panel, though the sound of the tip dragging along is a bit louder on the matte screen. (I And the Dolby Atmos speaker system sounds great, with audible bass and very clear vocals. I also prefer touching the matte texture, though preferences vary.)
If you squint, it’s a good laptop Lenovo’s Ideapad Flex 3 Chromebook is one of the tiniest Chromebooks I’ve ever used. Any laptop that costs that little is going to have some serious drawbacks — and the Flex 3 certainly does. They easily beat the Spin 713, which sounds tinny and thin. Photography by Monica Chin / The Verge.
Many people shop there for niche photography equipment — you can still buy darkroom supplies through B&H if you see fit — though there is also a lot of general tech on offer. inch iPad Pro sounds enticing but you don’t need the added storage, the 128GB version is also $100 off, making it just $999 at B&H. Read our review.
Intel’s cookie-cutter laptop is behind the competition while costing more The Element Lite is not the kind of laptop that Maingear usually makes. Compared to its fleet of game-ready laptops, this one stands out with a sleek, minimalist, and thin aluminum-clad design. Its speakers are good, too. It’s also too expensive.
It’s about the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, the best ultraportable gaming laptop ever made. But part of the appeal of a laptop with this form factor is that it could easily double as a driver for daily work or for messing around with friends on Zoom. It’s a world away from traditional gaming laptop designs like that of the Dell G5.
You can also use a laptop, Apple TV, or whatever device you use to stream video. Vava’s Laser TV provides a TV-like image and sound experience from a projector, but it costs a lot. It provides much louder, fuller sound than the built-in speakers on all of the other projectors. Photography by Alix Diaconis / The Verge.
Elite 7 Active offering the same core features and sound with tweaks that make them a better fit for workouts. The higher-end Elite 7s have better sound, active noise cancellation, wireless charging, and more extensive water resistance. Elite 7 Pro are the company’s new premium buds, with the $179.99 meant to help you relax.
You might be wondering why Samsung, a major supplier of OLED screens for phones, tablets, and laptops, has completely ceded the OLED TV market to LG. It might sound like a subtle change in approach, but it makes all the difference. Photography by Chris Welch / The Verge. Samsung’s S95B 4K OLED comes in 55-inch and 65-inch sizes.
Usually, it just makes me sound really great on Zoom calls (and lets me pretend I’m going to make more episodes of a podcast I made three episodes of and then gave up on). Here’s my current setup: I connect my laptop with Thunderbolt to the ThunderBay 4. I also sometimes use it as an improvised video mic, for which it’s only okay.
