As a relative newbie here at Forum One, I wasn't sure what to expect when as I headed to my very first "unconference." The unconference was about connecting government managers and staff, public engagement experts, online tool developers, and citizens to encourage shared insights, decisions, and actions in government.
Back in September, Forum One was one of the sponsors of CongressCamp, an informal "barcamp" unconference here in Washington. Even once the event ended, CongressCamp participants wished to help bridge the gap between citizen knowledge and congressional needs.
I think it is a fabulous technique for capturing and sharing knowledge from conferences and other nonprofit gatherings as I noted here. One of the people who posted was very knowledgable --so I emailed them to inquire if their nonprofit had done podcasting. All in all, podcamp was a valuable source of knowledge exchange.
One of the biggest traits of the nonprofit technology sector is a willingness to share experiences and knowledge. unconference. Transparency Camp is an unconference designed to convene a trans-partisan tribe of open government advocates from all walks — government representatives, technologists, developers, NGOs, wonks and activists — to share knowledge on how to use new technologies to make our government transparent and meaningfully accessible to the public.
The event also included plenary speakers, including a provocative talk about data methods from Alexandra Samuels and cross-track sessions from traditional panels to unconference. The culmination of these two and half very intense days was an Idea Accelerator Lab.
There is also the Accessibility Unconference in Boston on September 17, 2011. This lack of knowledge again raises the fragmented nature of information available on accessibility, as well as the difficulties in enforcing standards. And coming up in October, Accessibility Camp has events planned for Washington, D.C. and Ottowa.
