On the recent NTEN community call someone asked the panel to name 5 vendors (other than Blackbaud and Convio) to whom we’d send a CRM system RFP for a $100 million nonprofit. Fund-Master and GiftMaker Pro), of late, they’ve acquired companies and kept their products going (Team Approach, eTapestry, PIDI, Kintera).
At first blush, although Kintera officially got out the door first, announcing Connect weeks ago, and delivering the APIs and docs on Friday, their play is a good start, but Convio, announcing Open tomorrow, appears to be ahead in terms of providing real openness. Kintera’s Connect has an API that can do some very important things.
I looked over Allan Benamer’s post on the Convio and Kintera initiatives, I looked harder at the Convio Open and Kintera Connect docs, and I also had a chat with some Kintera folk. Allan is right – the Kintera API is more comprehensive, and provides for more flexibility than the Convio API.
As a 10,000 footer, NTEN’s new Donor Management System Survey is of keen interest. Included in the bottom four are 3 properties of Blackbaud: Raiser’s Edge, eTapestry, and Kintera Sphere which was in dead last place. And Kintera Sphere, I think, is going to open a car repair shop. iMIS rounded out the bottom four.)
Kintera opens a Developers Challenge. Developers who code solutions that integrate with Kintera using their open API platform, Connect , can win $15,000 or $5,000 (not the $25 K their big logo seems to suggest – that’s just the total they will award.)

This list came from my head, my bookmarks, and lists compiled by NTEN and Idealware for their donor management software surveys (and I’m not certain all of these are actually donor databases). Kintera Sphere. I thought it might be useful to compile a list of all of the commercial donor databases I’m aware of. GivingCapital.
December 12, 2007 I had a good look at NTEN’s CRM Satisfaction Survey (yippee for data!), Satisfaction with Convio, Kintera and Blackbaud all trailed these top 4 tools. 3 trackbacks } Product Blogs » Blog Archive » CiviCRM comes out on top in NTEN Survey 12.14.07 The only other tool in the top 5 was Salesforce.

Part Vb:APIs October 20, 2006 This morning, I sat in on the " Great Open API Debate " hosted by NTEN. First off, a tip o’ the hat to NTEN for organizing this, the participants of the panel for an interesting conversation, and Mark Bolgiano from the Council on Foundations for awesome moderation.
I know, I know, fundraising is one of the functions that almost all nonprofits share, and it is where the money is, and software developers have to make a living (er, well, Kintera is making more than a living – they are maximizing shareholder profit ,) but if just a fraction of the time, energy and money spent on building CRM and fundraising (..)
I finally got to meet folks from the Nonprofit Salesforce NPSF Google group that I had gotten to know online, reconnected with friends from the Philadelphia and New York user group communities and with people I met at NTEN’s NTC last year. Even though I didn’t travel with any colleagues, I always felt part of a connected group.
Almost a year ago, NTEN hosted a field wide discussion about the need for nonprofit tech vendors, particularly CRM systems for online fundraising, to offer open APIs. (A Last week, the major competitor to Convio, Kintera, announced its "open API" last week. Judi Sohn has a comparison of the two approaches.
Kintera uses something proprietary, as well as Convio. Other companies in the NP space are similar. I believe eTapestry runs on a database package called Versant. Constant Contact (a SaaS provider of email delivery) uses IBM DB2. I absolutely agree with your call for more openness.

Also, NTEN recently published a report on the results of a survey covering CRM satisfaction. based nonprofits are faced with two extremes: on the one hand, there are large large players like Convio , Kintera , and Blackbaud and on the other hand there are smaller providers like DIA , FirstGiving , and NetworkForGood.
