Here’s some news on a now famous NetSquared alumnus project. Ushahidi is an NGO headquartered in Kenya. It is a nonprofit tech company that develops free and open-source software for information collection, visualization, and crowdsourced interactive mapping to help mitigate disasters.

One of TechSoup's less-known areas of work has been to support and promote the work of other tech-for-good organizations, like Ushahidi in Kenya. Ushahidi has been developing open-source crisis mapping software for over eight years now. These folks do astonishing work.

In 2008, post-election violence erupted in Kenya. "Citizen journalists" throughout the country collaborated to collect information about this violence; they received incident reports from thousands of citizens via web and mobile phone, collated the data, and displayed it on a Google Maps mashup.
