I have previously written about the top issues addressed by the Treaty , but to recap, the Treaty is a wonderful instrument because it requires exceptions for people who are blind or have other print disabilities in national copyright laws. As the operators of Bookshare in the USA, which was made possible through a great exception in our copyright law here, we would love to make all of our books available to people with qualifying disabilities around the world. We expect that many of the big issues with the current text will get ironed out this week.

However, as the founder of the Bookshare online library, we have a great deal at stake in how the Treaty gets implemented. The Treaty of Marrakesh, Top Issues: What’s the goal of the Treaty? This is satisfied by having a law like the Chafee Amendment in the U.S., or similar laws in other countries like India and the EU.

WIPO has a mandate from its member states, and is working to address the need to change laws and get more accessible books flowing. law works: the one that made Bookshare possible.

We get a huge amount of pro bono assistance from the legal profession, both because of our social impact as a nonprofit, and because of the challenging and interesting issues we tackle. We are now looking for a half-time general counsel to join our team and manage the host of legal issues we are always investigating. What’s next?
