At NTC this year, I interviewed Mark Horvath , creator of InvisiblePeople.tv. Mark's expertise in video production, his personal experience with homelessness, and his huge heart uniquely position him to help homeless people share their stories. This year’s Day of Service featured three different projects – a computer recycling project and installation of a wireless network in Washington, DC’s largest homeless shelter and meal preparation at DC Central Kitchen. Approximately 100 volunteers participated in service activities. Tech Recycling Day.
The Friday plenary session at the NTC featured Dan Heath, Co-Author of Flip the Switch, and was all about organizational change. Also new this year is the online NTC. She gave a quick update on NTC and thanked everyone including, staff, the community, and sponsors. This year 2008 people are in attendance, the most ever.

This will be his first NTC Conference since 2002 that he can't attend! Joel works for the Homeless Services Network of Central Florida & Volusia-Flagler County Coalition for the Homeless now. For the past five years, I've coordinated the NTEN/NTC Day of Service and before that participated as a volunteer. Susan and Karen were on a twenty-person team, led by John Nuno of Cisco, that worked with homeless clients in a community technology lab at the Wilderness Alliance. Peter did a strategy consult with a local organization.
You may be familiar with the NTC ( Nonprofit Technology Conference ) hosted by NTEN. The Day of Service is an opportunity for nonprofit techies to give back to the local community - in form of sharing knowledge one-on-one with a local organization or participate in a group project like installing a wireless network in a homeless shelter!

I'm the sole IT person at my non-profit organization (we are a shelter for homeless families), and we are undergoing severe budget cuts at the moment. I joined a group project installing a mesh wireless network on Treasure Island, a community in San Francisco which is home to many low income families many of who were previously homeless. Cisco sponsored the project and provided the hardware for the network. Photo Credits: SteveLavo (Flickr).
