The theme of TEDxSantaCruz was "Open." It gave me a chance to really think about how we have been opening up our museum and what it means for our community. We can change that by embracing participatory culture and opening up to the active, social ways that people engage with art, history, science, and ideas today.

I've long admired this museum for its all-encompassing commitment to community co-creation , and the visit was a kind of pilgrimage to their new site (opened in 2008). She did several things over the course of the tour to make it participatory, and she did so in a natural, delightful way. But participatory facilitation can be taught.

The Silk Mill is part of the Derby Museums , a public institution of art, history, and natural history. This means that not only have they turned their museum into an experimental project space, they have opened that space explicitly and intentionally to community co-production. It''s serious. Our museum in Santa Cruz has been slammed by those who believe participatory experiences have gone too far. We always knew that the inclusion of participatory and community-centered practices in arts institutions was controversial. To me, the backlash against participatory and community-centered experiences is not surprising.

I can't say that any one experience--working on a collage with other visitors, swinging on a hammock, discovering a participatory display for pocket artifacts in the bathroom--directly contributed to increased attendance and giving. They all have in concert, and they build on each other.

It's my second week as the Executive Director at The Museum of Art & History in Santa Cruz, CA, and boy is my everything tired. Film festival openings. I want to get some used furniture and create "lounges" on these landings where volunteers can do crafts or history research with visitors in a comfortable setting.

I''ve seen participatory artworks that lay untouched by visitors because the invitation to participate is not explicit enough. Throw in a few participatory elements, and suddenly you have visitors trying to arbitrate amongst themselves. But it will open up the possibility for participation and experimental work with less fear.

While the majority of experience-based museums like children's and science museums have unrestricted noncommercial photography policies, many collections-based art and history museums continue to maintain highly restrictive photo policies. And I think the fourth and fifth are bizarre and ungenerous to visitors.

This project wove together many different participatory threads. The exhibition evolved after it opened. We co-created it from start to finish with community partners. There were over 100 partners. We commissioned new collaborative artwork. We invited visitors to take real action in response to what they saw.

I've seen this line of questioning almost completely disappear in the past two years due to many research studies and reports on the value and rise of participation, but in 2006-7, social media and participatory culture was still seen as nascent (and possibly a passing fad). In 2008, the conversation started shifting to "how" and "what."

Today is my one-year anniversary as the executive director of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History. We went through a dramatic financial turnaround and redefined our relationship with our community through a series of experimental participatory projects and new programmatic approaches.
