In the history gallery, we have some blended props and artifacts, and it's rarely clear what is and is not ok to touch. Art, however, does not come to museums pre-hardened.

The greatest thing that I came away with is that the United States' and the European notions of what African history is all about, are so simplified. It is a much more complex and nuanced history.

The three Bay Area municipalities, along with Oakland and San Francisco (who haven't placed their orders yet) have all signed-on to be part of Plug-In Bay Area, an initiative to put more plug-in hybrid vehicles on the road. In October the City of Berkeley soft ordered 40 plug-ins and in December the city of Alameda soft ordered 98.

MN150 is a newish permanent exhibition (opened in Oct 2007) at the Minnesota History Center that marks the sesquicentennial of Minnesota with 150 of “the most influential forces in the state’s history.” I was really surprised by the range and just how much people know about history. It requires trading a certain history for an uncertain future--a nerve-wracking prospect no matter the situation. Two institutions I see making this "or" choice in exciting ways are the Brooklyn Museum and the Oakland Museum in California. You can't just start with who you already have in the middle and build infinitely outward.

So the brief history is that Back to Earth was originated with a vision that Eric Fenster had when he was on a vision quest in the Owl's Head Mountains in. We started taking youth from inner cities, of places like Oakland and East Palo Alto, into the woods. a clearer picture of what we're doing now. near Death Valley, California.

When I asked her why teenage prostitution is so prevalent in Oakland, she said, "Because they can do it here. It can't happen fast enough."
