I have a guest post up on the NTEN blog discussing some of the ways social media was put into action as soon as the earthquakes struck in Haiti: When disaster strikes, we want information as soon as possible and we want to help just as quickly. How can we do that?

Over the last week, technology has played an unprecedented role in bringing aid to and saving lives in Haiti. Over $22 million has been raised by the American Red Cross via text message (about a fifth of total Haiti-related giving to the organization so far). And then there’s the role that Facebook and Twitter are playing.
Whether we look at mapping tools, fundraising, or missing person systems, the social media response to the January earthquakes in Haiti all leverage the powerful technology we can hold in our hands: our mobile phones. The disaster in Haiti is a perfect example of these changes: the impact of the Real-Time Web and the power of our phones.

In preparation for your end-of-year campaigns, NTEN has devoted September to talking about fundraising. A recap of fundraising resources of the first 2/3 of 2010 wouldn't be complete without some discussion of the incredible work that the Red Cross did using mobile and social media to raise funds and awareness about the disaster in Haiti.
If you skip that, your mobile tactics won’t yield much impact or learning. What we witnessed over a year ago with SMS donations to the Haiti disaster is not going to be the norm for nonprofits. Maybe that first step is research. A simple audience survey to learn: How is your target audience using their mobile phones?
I could point to the Haiti disaster as the tipping point in cell phones -- for the increased engagement with donors, and more importantly, for the contributions of information from survivors. At a recent NTEN chat , I pushed this a bit further, talking about the need to pay radical attention. But you already know this. .

Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Facebook set up a Global Disaster Relief page , with the intention that it "serve as a collaborative resource for individuals, non-profits, governments and industry to raise awareness for those in need around the world".
With the recent calamity in Haiti, the NPOs and NGOs that comprise the disaster relief/response sector have jumped into action, mobilizing their staff, volunteers, and equipment to help those affected. Geolocation tools like Ushahidi and data collaboration tools like Sahana were used in Haiti to help responders. Just last year, the Red Cross hosted a summit on emergency social data to explore how aid agencies might use social and mobile tools to better share data. So far today, we've seen Google's Crisis Response page.
Since the earthquake in Haiti, we've seen an explosion in interest for all things mobile. Donations via text messages , tweeting real-time updates , mapping need and resources : all examples of stories that captured our sector's attention and got people talking about mobile. The time for mobile is clearly now.
