The NetSquared conference just wrapped up, and it was a lot of fun. Netsquared had picked 21 projects to run through two days of pitches concluding with voting from the attendees. The top group won a prize of $25,000, and that was Maplight, a group that connects political donations to legislative votes.

Ushahidi, an open source project originally deployed in Kenya to report post-election violence has since been downloaded and deployed for many other events and disasters, including Haiti, Chile, and Japan. Here are the definitions I use in my work and when talking to groups I work with. It isn’t right for every project or process and is often not right for every organization. Setting goals and defining messaging at the start of your process to target each group will help you plan for and engage beyond just those you know.

For the most part, I agree with the way the crowds voted – but, given that people were able to submit and vote at the same time, it means some groups only submitted on the very last day, not leaving much time for votes. There are lots of examples of projects that use crowdsourcing, even this one! Sometimes that means crowdsourcing.

As some of you know, part of my work is being the Community Builder for NetSquared , a project of Tech Soup that facilitates the adoption of social web tools by nonprofits and NGOs. At the Conference, project teams will have an opportunity to display and discuss their mashups, and attendees will vote to select the top three.
Netsquared Voting Deadline Extended. Due to some technical glitches , you now have 48 additional hours to figure out what 5-10 of the 150 fantastic social change and technology projects at Netsquared will receive your vote. An extension is actually good thing, gives us more time to look at all those projects!
