I spent today at day 1 of the TechSoup Global Summit in Mountain View with two hundred and forty people who work in the TechSoup Global Network around the world, plus other stakeholders. I’ve been involved with TechSoup/Netsquared Network since its inception back six years ago and so it is nice to be part of the narrative arc.
Last week, I got to BoardSource at 8 am just so I could hear Marnie Webb and Rebecca Masisak, CO-CEOs of TechSoup Global share their lessons learned in developing, weaving, and stewarding two very different types of networks. The second network, Netsquared , in contrast was more loosely controlled with a lower risk in failure.

Before I worked at NTEN, I managed the NetSquared program at TechSoup Global. At that time, most of NetSquared’s content came from the community blog, where anyone working at the intersection of technology and social impact could create a profile and contribute to the blog with stories, case studies, and more.

Each month, the NetSquared community (a project of TechSoup Global) meets up offline at NetSquared Local events around the world to discuss ideas, meet new people, and work together to make social change. Recently, many of these NetSquared Local meetings are being streamed live on the Internet via livestream or online recording.
Part of my role as the Global Community Development Manager at NetSquared is to support and grow our offline organizers from around the world. We now have over 50 cities globally hosting monthly events with many more getting started.
My work with NetSquared and with Social by Social has helped shape so many of my beliefs about community organizing and has offered the opportunity to meet so many others doing it well. What’s the point in using “global&# tools (social media) for local organizing?

TechSoup, Caravan Studios , and NetSquared were on the scene to observe and participate in hackathon events all over the country. Arthur Grau of NetSquared Honolulu reported back on the National Day of Civic Hacking/Code for Hawaii event in Honolulu. Interestingly, the hackathons varied in terms of their activities and the challenges.

For the last two and a half years, Amy has worked as Community Development Manager for Community-Driven Innovation at TechSoup Global , but we knew her back when she was just setting out on the road to nptech super-stardom with the Meyer Memorial Trust right here in Portland, where she led our local 501 Tech Club.
