On Friday, I facilitated the final face-to-face workshop for the Social Media Lab for 25 arts organizations inspired by Thomas Edison’s approach. Opera San Jose Case Study. Opera San Jose gave a presentation on its #operaplot hashtag contest where participants has to tweet the plots of operas in 140 characters.

As some of you know, part of my work is being the Community Builder for NetSquared , a project of Tech Soup that facilitates the adoption of social web tools by nonprofits and NGOs. You don't need to have tech expertise to submit a project to the Challenge, just an idea for a change you want to make that could be facilitated by a mashup.

Not only does this help me frame and tailor the talk I give to the audience, but facilitates Twitter conversations before. Examples: San Jose Opera use of #Operaplot Twitter Hashtag. When possible, I get a list of attendees at workshops or conferences, and I visit their web sites and social media outposts.

Flying into San Jose yesterday, I laughed out loud when I looked out the window and saw Clifford the Big Red Dog below me, a cheerful addition to the skyline (thanks to the Children's Discovery Museum). I love these games because they use web and mobile technology as springboards to facilitate fun in the real world.

Finally, museums as "facilitators" of visitors' own experiences and interests. A few highlights: Cecelia Garibay talked about audience development at the San Jose Children's Discovery Museum. Then, he moved to museums as a "thing to do"--to touch things, play with interactives.
