The best book I've read on the topic is Facilitators Guide to Participatory Decision-Making by Sam Kaner. We almost always use nametags with a playful prompt on them ("what superhero would you be?," "what's your favorite local place to relax?" Create a structure that values peoples' participation.

Our programs end up being the hub of the local science learning ecosystem--especially in communities where there isn''t a science center for miles in any direction. I still get fidgety listening to the podcast, but now I see it as an artifact of a supremely conducted participatory project rather the sole product of the process.
