We had an incredible team of women tech advisers from Silicon Valley, all experts, and who taught classes on how to use various tools such as Google, Canva, and Indiegogo, complete with detailed work books with exercises. Nina Simon, the executive director of the museum, is an expert in participatory design and fantastic facilitator. Next we did a series of small group exercises for participants to identify their stress triggers and reactions to stress. We also had interns recording during the honeycomb exercise. We gave them a sheet of paper to use to make random notes about ideas they had--and we stopped the meeting a couple times to encourage people to write things down. In the end, we had lots of pieces of paper with ideas tied to specific individuals with whom we can follow up.

To get people in the mindset for brainstorming, I lead them through a couple of improvisation exercises that teach acceptance and openness to new ideas. It was even more useful to learn how participatory writing visions can be. We took 30 minutes for the exercise. We learned how to write visions, how to use them, and how to share them with others. For me, writing a vision was empowering, exciting, and useful. I briefly explained what visioning is and why it might be valuable for us.

The participatory element employs an accessible speculative question. The participatory element is modeled well by the "official" content. It's available, but it's not the point of the whole exercise. There is no wrong answer to the question, "what do you imagine this thing might be in your wildest dreams?"
