I got a chance to test this out in a more orchestrated way (as opposed to the usual consultant/client interactions) when I facilitated/taught an OpenOffice.org “untraining&# earlier this month at Google HQ in NYC (some more details are on the Google Blog.) I learned a lot.

The event also included plenary speakers, including a provocative talk about data methods from Alexandra Samuels and cross-track sessions from traditional panels to unconference. The culmination of these two and half very intense days was an Idea Accelerator Lab. Often, facilitation teams are brought together by an event host.

The new structure will cut down on noise and allow for more interactive networking and socializing. Workshops will be interactive, 3-hour long, hands-on learning opportunities with tangible outcomes. Instead of sitting down at tables in the ballroom, on Day 1 you’ll pick up a box lunch and choose a session room based on topic.
