Hospitals need to supplement the traditional "pink lady," with volunteer opportunities for teens, baby boomers, and people in their 20s, 30s, 40s. For example, after our conversation, I checked out the volunteer opportunities at one of my local hospitals, the Children's Hospital and Research Center in Oakland.

The primary need, obviously, in our community, West Oakland, is a lack of access to healthy and affordable foods. We do a lot of work with teens in the summertime. It's not just for West Oakland; it's for young people throughout the Bay Area. We have a program called, "Collards and Commerce."

Nola is as old as the Center she works for, thirty, and over the past two years, she has become an expert on sexually exploited minors in Oakland and has watched as the population grows. When I asked her why teenage prostitution is so prevalent in Oakland, she said, "Because they can do it here. It can't happen fast enough."
