With initial funding of $2,500, he started the CompuMentor Project to match computer enthusiast volunteers called computer mentors with Bay Area nonprofits that needed the help. He took a psychology degree from the University of Chicago in 1969 and became a reporter and columnist for the Arizona Republic newspaper in Phoenix.
