Social Enterprise: Black Pearls from Nukuoro Atoll

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

I found out that there is a hierarchy of remote islands. There are the big main islands, which are reasonably remote, like Pohnpei or Weno on Chuuk (my next stop). These islands have international air service like the Island Hopper I talked about in an earlier post. Then, there are the islands you can get to by small boat that are less than two hours from the mainland.

My Birthday Cause: Free Geek!

Amy Sample Ward

I have a birthday coming up and over the weekend I received an email from Causes, the social change application in Facebook. Here’s what it said: Happy (Almost) Birthday! Thanks to Facebook, in two weeks all of your friends will see that it’s your birthday. Instead of just writing on your wall, or giving you something you don’t need, what if they had a chance to help a cause you believe in?

I'm getting ready to a workshop later this week, I did a simple pre-workshop assessment, asking folks about their level of experience/comfort and their burning questions. I usually do this in a room with a quick poll, but I wanted to push myself to create the content based on their questions.

Reddit to Rally Volunteers for Needy Nonprofits

Wild Apricot

Last year, social bookmarking site Reddit partnered up to raise over $3,000 for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF.org), a non-profit selected by the website’s users to benefit from the fund-raising drive. This year, they’re trying something different — raising volunteers instead of cash. It's partly an acknowledgement that many people have few funds to spare, and partly a nod to the wealth of high-tech talent found among Reddit users.

Today something good happened

Steve Bridger

Why is there no global search engine for good news? Imagine… a humungous aggregator of all the positive good that millions of people have done today. The tiny, but not so insignificant acts of kindness and philanthropy, which if joined together would add up to one heck of a powerful narrative for a more just world. Bad news happens fast and travels fast, while a good story can take much longer to blossom and bear fruit.

Side-by-Side: Starbucks + Girl Effect

We’ve talked about the power of the Girl Effect video , which uses only typography and classical piano to make its point. It’s a very compelling piece, and has received a lot of attention exactly for its freshness and innovation. Well, Starbucks released a new ad during Saturday Night Live this past weekend that’s shockingly similar.

Fiscal Sponsorship Resources

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

Setting up as a nonprofit is not easy. Starting a for-profit in California took me one or two weeks, and I think it's still that fast. But, setting up a nonprofit and getting 501(c)(3) status can take a year or more and cost ten or twenty thousand dollars (unless you get pro bono legal help). Many folks doing starting up nonprofit work might be better off finding a fiscal sponsor.

Step-by-Step: How To Set Up A Nonprofit Listening Post (Twitter - Part 1)

Beth's Blog: How Nonprofits Can Use Social Media

Photo by Andy Field I think Chris Brogan said that the secret to Twitter is listening (or search), not blasting your message out. I'm paraphrasing. The other day a commenter asked me if I could write something that offered some practical how to listening tips as well as applying it. Since I'm going to be teaching the Listening Module for the WeAreMedia workshop in February, I'm going to write up some step-by-steps on how to do this with different monitoring tools.

Dear Museums on Twitter, Thanks for experimenting in a new and largely uncharted online environment. It's not easy, and many of you are taking innovative, exciting approaches to it. But not enough of you. Only 80% of Twitter success is showing up, and I've been frustrated by the lack of creativity applied to the other 20%.

Social media and the Surveillance Culture

Living as I do right in the heart of D.C., things like this happen: I had lunch the other day with a friend who is very knowledgeable about the hacker world within in the so-called "intelligence community". This is a world where it's common to get your secret clearance before you are old enough to buy a beer. And a sizable crew of these young folks are deployed to monitor - and participate in on behalf of the agency - all sorts of social media activity.

Alas, I had not the technical skill to create a mash-up with the Google Maps API.
