Watching policeman rough up a taxi driver. Second and final delayed blog posting from Tunis. Original post from Nov 18, 2005: The WSIS Summit continues to be fascinating. In a recent post, I alluded to human rights activists getting beat up. Yesterday I had a personal experience with the police presence. I took a taxi back to the conference after a brief visit to Carthage for lunch.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, low key, lots of food, but Christmas kinda stresses me out. Every year I tell myself that I won't buy into the hype. I won't feel like I have to prove how much I love my family and friends with something I give them on December 25th. I went to an acupuncturist a long time ago who told me that Christmas and Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve fall at the wrong time of year.

Chris Locke's post of various booklists people have assembled at Amazon made me realize that the good old book is a problematic resource these days for those of us who inhabit the blogosphere - you can't just link to it, or receive it in your rss feed. Not yet. And you can't really read three or four of them while waiting to order your latte. And I've been dying to start really using my wiki for something.

Tunisia is very interesting this week! The WSIS conference is going on, human rights activists are getting beaten up, and we're talking about how information technology can help build a better world. I gave my talk here on Tuesday, entitled: Building a Global Library for People with Print Disabilities. It went well: many passionate and interesting people from the disabilities movement are here and we are definitely brainstorming ways to join our efforts.

Most of the participants are between the ages of 17-25, working class and youth of color.

One of the advantages of good software is that it enables an organization to manage a great deal of organizational complexity. But there is a sort of misguided complexity I'm concerned about, complexity whose cost outweighs its benefits. We've been at this business for over 15 years, and in that time computers have become ever more central to organizational life.
The Tech Awards yesterday were a blast. The Mercury News ran a great story and quoted Peggy Gibbs, one of our execs: Old problems, new solutions : The Tech Museum Awards also provide a venue for many local foundations and non-profits to seek out new ideas and partners. Powerhouse Museum Electronic Fabric Swatch Book is a really cool project and an example of using a folksonomy as a way to address the reality that Museums often use subject categorizations that don't reflect the terms most people use when searching online. Across the nonprofit sector, organizations invest heavily in donor retention efforts, yet the struggle of cultivating lasting relationships remains. I've been looking for some how-to guides for mini-documentaries that would cover some of the asethetics, planning, and process as well as the technical parts. I came across the FourDocs Guides via Nonprofit Online News. A lot of what is here could be adapted for vlogging if you wanted to create "vlogumentaries." I loved the " Start Thinking " guide that teaches how to structure, subject, and style.
I can make better choices chair Originally uploaded by cambodia4kidsorg. Marnie Webb asks "Why don???t we think mistakes are a part of excellence? I think in our culture we tend to view someone who has made a mistake as being "dumb." Maybe it has something to do with our upbringing or our educational experience.
