Blackbaud @ SXSW 2011. It’s that time again. South by South West Interactive 2011 is upon us. There are a ton of great activities, networking opportunities and sessions focused on the non-profit space this year – one of which Blackbaud will be moderating. It should be a great conversation between (check out the panelists below) social networking providers and their non-profit users.
Guest Beneblog by Patrick Ball, Jeff Klingner, and Kristian Lum After the earthquake in Haiti, Ushahidi organized a centralized text messaging system to allow people to inform others about people trapped under damaged buildings and other humanitarian crises. This system was extremely effective at communicating specific needs in a timely way that required very little additional infrastructure.
Ninety percent of your nonprofit’s success on Facebook is dependent upon the Admin who manages your Facebook Page. If she or he doesn’t have the personality or passion to elicit Comments and Thumbs Ups in response to their Status Updates, then the ROI from your Facebook Page will be minimal. Community building on Facebook and other social networking sites is an art and finding your Facebook voice takes time and experimentation.
A friend forwarded the following description of a scam aimed at a well-known college. Fortunately, they didn't fall for it. I would like to make everyone aware of a recent situation here that is most likely a scam to launder stolen credit card funds, appearing as a gift. A $9,000 gift is received and approved from an unknown entity (in this case a “Cassandra Harvey”), with Smyrna, GA address, Yahoo email and legitimate phone number.

Do you really know your donors? Not just what they give, but who they are? 👥 In this interactive session, we’ll break down how nonprofits can use behavioral indicators (affinity, recency, frequency, and monetary value) to build prospecting segments that go beyond wealth screening and actually align with donor identity. You’ll walk away with practical strategies to move beyond basic demographics and cultivate supporters based on how they already engage with you!
Last week, I had the opportunity to present at the 2011 Volunteer Management for Nonprofits Conference here in New York. It was a shared session, where I presented some basic information to (mostly) organizations who haven’t yet tried out Twitter, focusing on using the platform in general as well as ways to activate and engage a community; and Katherine from Baby Buggy shared her own case study of building the @ loverecycled community on Twitter and helping turn those interactions into res
The organization I helped found as Colorectal Cancer Coalition in 2005 officially became Fight Colorectal Cancer on Monday, March 6, 2011. This is a post I've been waiting over a year to write, so apologies for its length. It's hard for me to keep a secret this big from my blog for over a year! I hope it's a fun read for anyone either looking to redo their own small nonprofit brand, or who wants a deeper dive on what we did at Fight Colorectal Cancer.

I just got back from the 2011 Nonprofit Technology Conference , where listening was top of mind: Listening to the amazing speakers, listening to the #nptech community , and listening to all the great ideas floating around the halls of the Washington Hilton. I gotta hand it to Holly Ross and the tireless NTEN team for putting on yet another fantastic event!
A bit over a year ago, I wrote a post about the status of Drupal/Salesforce Integration. I figured it was time to do an update. At the moment, if you want to integrate Drupal and Salesforce, you have three options: Use the contributed modules (or have a developer install and configure them for you). Use Jackson River’s Springboard. Roll your own (or have a developer roll your own for you.).
Your nonprofit’s social media campaigns are only as good as the social media manager running them. Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare are not miracle-producers. They are simply tools that can result in high ROI for your nonprofit, but only if the person sharing Status Updates, Twittering, and Checking-in on behalf of your nonprofit has the right skills, experience and training to make social media produce results.
A recent guest guest Beneblog explains why we believe a correlation found between SMS text messages and building damage by researchers was not useful. Some of the questions we received made us realize we need to be clearer about why this is important. Why did we bother analyzing this claim? Why does it matter? Thanks to Patrick Ball, Jeff Klinger and Kristian Lum for contributing this material (and making it much clearer).
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
My latest post is up on the Stanford Social Innovation Review – you can read it and join the conversation at SSIR or read the repost below. —– I’ve been thinking about slacktivism a lot lately. I recently did a guest lecture at The New School on the topic, I’ve had countless conversations with colleagues and friends, and I’ve been capturing ideas and questions to myself on scraps of paper everywhere.
Do you want to celebrate the heart and soul of your non-profit? If you can write an original 4-8 line poem that reflects your non-profit's mission, your organization may be eligible for a Heart & Soul Grant of $10,000 or $5,000 USD! The competition starts today - March 1 and ends March 28, 2011.( read more ).
I’ve enjoyed watching the use of QR codes grow recently, particularly in the nonprofit space. For a sector often looking for creative ways to communicate our message, QR codes are a great tool for things like advocacy and scavenger hunts. But they are also great for traditional calls to action! The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is a national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach, and advocacy for a cure.
CRM (which I am defining rather loosely, rather than tightly, for the purpose of this post – as the tool or set of tools used to track constituents, donations, perhaps even events and volunteers) are arguably the most important technology tools that nonprofits use. Organizations use this tool to track donors, send out newsletters, track the success of campaigns, track who is engaged with the organization in what ways, etc.
Managing HR tasks like payroll, compliance, and employee data can overwhelm small businesses. That’s where a Human Capital Management (HCM) solution comes in. Our eBook, Why Every Small Business Needs an HCM Solution: A Comprehensive Guide , shows how an HCM system automates tedious processes, ensuring your business stays compliant and efficient. You’ll learn how to simplify payroll, eliminate costly errors, and empower your employees with self-service tools.
The rise of QR Codes has helped many nonprofits understand the need for mobile websites, or at the very least mobile-optimized web pages. A QR code that launches a desktop-designed web page in a mobile browser just doesn’t make a whole of sense. Neither does linking to desktop sites inside smartphone apps, in group text alerts, or on location-based communities like Foursquare, Gowalla and Facebook Places.
We're looking for someone great to take on a crucial new position at Benetech, Vice President, Fund Raising. Benetech has been expanding its impact rapidly over the last few years, and we need a dynamic executive to join our senior leadership team. Benetech gets the majority of its funding from revenues: from product and services sales paid for by our users (or third-party payers who buy our services for our users).
Are you using share buttons and or bars on your websites? They are a key enabler to make your site and it’s content viral, i.e. allowing people who view it to easily share it with others. While you can get all fancy and create your own buttons, bars, or code, you really don’t need to at all. Many companies offer the buttons and bars for free and make it easy for you to use them on your own site so all you have to do is cut and paste the code.

Personal computing, the internet and telecommunications have made such significant advancements over the past 25 years that we can now hold a device in one hand that’s capable of making phone calls, sending text messages, taking and viewing pictures and video (HD video that is), browsing the internet, sending email, playing games (any Angry Birds fans out there?
I didn’t make it to Drupalcon Chicago, but, thanks to the organizers of the conference, it doesn’t mean I need to miss the sessions. I’ve been looking through videos both the regular sessions , as well as the ignite sessions (thanks, @gregoryheller ), and here are my highlight presentations (this does reflect what I’m interested in more than it reflects what’s the best of DrupalCon): Competing with Giants – interesting info – not directly related to stuf
Gowalla may not get the online buzz that Foursquare does, but where I live it’s more popular than Foursquare. Similar to Myspace and Facebook in 2007 and 2008, there’s seemingly a geographic difference between Foursquare and Gowalla users. In large urban areas Fousquare dominates, but in smaller towns across America (and the globe) there’s a growing number of Gowalla users.
I just spent a couple of days in Vancouver with the team at the Public Knowledge Project , a terrific example of an open source social enterprise. Their largest project is Open Journal Systems, software for running a scholarly journal. It takes an editor through the entire process of operating and publishing a journal, with a heavy emphasis on open access journals (where the articles are freely available to everybody from the moment they are published).

Across the nonprofit sector, organizations invest heavily in donor retention efforts, yet the struggle of cultivating lasting relationships remains. While attracting new donors is crucial, the lack of repeat donors poses significant financial risks. Through a comprehensive analysis of industry data, experts argue that there is a direct correlation between donor burnout, donor retention, and the talent retention crisis.
I picked up some malware recently and one of the many annoyances it caused was problems with Firefox's security settings. When visiting secure (https:) web sites Firefox would say "the connection is untrusted." When I said I wanted to trust the site I would get a further error saying "sec_error_untrusted_issuer" (The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is not trusted).
Today we’re tackling some questions on tools and tactics for volunteer management that were asked in the most recent Wild Apricot blog reader survey. The reader questions fall into three areas: scheduling volunteers, tracking volunteer hours, and how to hold volunteers accountable for the work they’ve committed to do. Scheduling and Tracking Volunteer Hours There’s a fair bit of overlap between tools for scheduling and time-tracking volunteers, so it’s important to consider what features you rea
This interview was initially published in our monthly eNewsletter – Strategies, Tips and Best Practices for Event Fundraising Professionals. Make sure to subscribe to get future issues. By now you have probably heard about the committee dashboard feature within Friends Asking Friends. The committee dashboard lives within your event website and helps event committee members track their progress in recruiting corporate sponsorships and company teams.
In my time working on web development for nonprofit organizations, I’ve seen more RFPs than I can even begin to count. I’ve even written a few. And, especially since I’ve primarily been someone in the role of having to respond to an RFP, I’ve gotten pretty good at spotting RFPs that I feel don’t serve either the organization, or the developers well.
Effectively managing cloud technology is getting more complex. From cybersecurity concerns, vendor lock-in, cost increases, or lack of transparency on costs, it can quickly get out of control. Knowing what you can control and finding a platform that’s built with nonprofits in mind is key.
