Mobility does not equal freedom

Zen and the Art of Nonprofit Technology

I was headed on an epic trip. I was, really. I have driven cross-country more times than I can count, and it is an activity I have much enjoyed in my life, although I know that is mysterious to many - it is an activity many do not enjoy at all. There is a way in which long-distance driving was a kind of emblem of my freedom to move about in the world - it was part of how I defined myself.

Lame spams of the day: confirmation from [insert social network name]

Robert Weiner

Is it a trend or just me? In the past 2 days I've received spams in the form of confirmations from MySpace, Habbo, Tagged, and Foursquare. They don't look related, but it's an odd coincidence. Here they are: 1) Subject: Please confirm your Myspace account cancellation. Sender: Myspace (noreply@message.sease.com). Text: You're… leaving us? Sure you're ready to let go of your friends, music, and that profile design you spent so much time creating?

The #1 Reason Nonprofit Websites Fail and How to Fix It Immediately

NetWits

Everyone gets excited about redesigning their website. It’s a chance to start fresh. New ideas, a fresh design, new technology and a renewed focus on your online presence – all factors that drive peoples excitement. There’s one problem though. You’re focus is in the wrong place. Too much time is spent looking inwards at what needs to improve rather than on the primary focus of the site – that is, appealing to and engaging your supporters.

What I learned during my lenten fast

Zen and the Art of Nonprofit Technology

As you might recall, I chose to bite off a fairly big chunk of things for my lenten fast. And I'm bringing that fast to a close this week (sort of slowly easing into things rather than all at once on Easter.). I learned a ton during this time, and I think much of it will take time to filter through me. I was unsurprised by some things, and surprised by others.

We’re #3!

NCE Social Media

Pinterest is now the #3 social network according to a new Experian report. That’s pretty amazing for a social network that was launched 2 years ago and still requires you to get an invitation to be on it. Being third means more people use it than LinkedIn , Tumblr or Google+. Some people call Pinterest a new version of a scrapbook. Other’s aren’t sure what to think.

Is fear a prison?

Zen and the Art of Nonprofit Technology

This image is making its way around facebook, and on first look, I can see why most people feel like it makes sense. But I have been doing a lot of personal work around fear lately, and I have a different perspective. I think that fear is a good thing. At its core, fear is a set of physiological, psychological, and emotional responses to external threats.

Twitter Following

NCE Social Media

A new blog post over at the Social Media Examiner on how to grow your followers got me thinking. I have a bunch of followers on Twitter, but I’m not sure how I got them. Hopefully it’s for my witty repartee. All joking aside, it is likely because it’s something I’ve posted. Something about disabilities, something about ACHIEVA , something I’ve retweeted, or something of mine that was retweeted.

Lame spam of the day: US Airways reservation

Robert Weiner

I got 8 of these at 2 different email addresses, always a sign of spam. The pitch is similar to the American Airlines ticket scam but not as well done. The U.S. Air logo looks terrible, the formatting is sloppy, all the departure cities and times are the same -- only the flight number and confirmation code (and hyperlink destination) vary, and there's no arrival city (which is perfect if you think about it).
