Jimmy Does Davos At the suggestion of Victor D'Allant (Mr. Social Edge), I've invited my 20-year-old son to comment on his experience accompanying me to Davos. Jimmy wasn't admitted to the core Forum events, but was able to attend about half of what I did. My Davos Experience -Jimmy Fruchterman I really wasn't sure what to expect coming to Davos. When my father offered to take me I accepted without hesitation.

I wish I was able to attend, but am glad that many of my clients have the opportunity to go.
I read this article about gospel aerobics in the Oakland Tribune after Christmas and thought it was great. During a gospel aerobics class, the instructor plays gospel music (which I love), and makes connections for the women between their spiritual and physical health. As one student says, "It's a whole approach that the body is your temple as opposed to 'Thin is in,'" John says.

Do you really know your donors? In a recent post I sounded off about needless complexity in Information Systems and pointed out how it creates, among other problems, a huge knowledge burden: it gets more and more difficult for anyone to understand the system. But even if you try to keep it simple, making sure you have an adequate organizational knowledge base to manage your information system - your hardware, software, website, database, and processes - is quite a challenge.
Social Responsibility in Davos I attended a great breakfast this morning on the digital divide. Now, digital divide has been a buzzword for a long time, but we've learned a lot from different initiatives and the ICT industry is very interested in continuing to work on the issue from a lot of angles. This morning's breakfast was a very active discussion with about fifty people from industry, government and NGOs (the nonprofit sector), ably moderated by David Kirkpatrick of Fortume Magazine.

The Value of Attending Davos Trying to explain the value of being here runs a real risk. I call it the name-dropping risk. There are so many cool people here, and in many cases this is my main opportunity to say hi to them in a year. The other thing is that I'm almost exclusively talking to people with an active interest in social entrepreneurship or a particular social cause.
The Voices of Davos This meeting is all about conversations. It's an opportunity to connect with interesting people from around the world, all with important perspectives. I just want to share some of the voices I've heard so far this week. These are based on my contemporaneous notes. It will give you a great idea of why this is such a blast. Zanelle Mbeki (first lady of South Africa), talked about the opportunities in market failure.
Putting the Social Into Davos I arrived in Davos Sunday night for the Schwab Social Entrepreneur Summit. Dr. Klaus Schwab has made social entrepreneurship his cause, and over the past five year has brought social entrepreneurs into the World Economic Forum. That's easy for him to do because he founded the Forum! Forty Schwab SEs are here, and a bunch of them are new.
Anti-WEF Protest in Zurich I'm not supposed to start blogging about Davos and the World Economic Forum until Tuesday, but the WEF found me in Zurich on Saturday night. My son, Jimmy, and I were wandering through the old town to find dinner and we ran into a good-sized protest against the WEF by a couple of hundred folks in black ski masks. They stopped right in front of us (outside the Zic Zac Rock Hotel) and someone did a five minute harangue in German over a megaphone.
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Online Memorial to Iranian Victims Roya and Ladan Boroumand might be the first to say that they are not "techies". But you would hardly know it from looking at the beautiful website they just released. Their website , found at [link] is an on-line memorial honoring over nine thousand victims allegedly killed by the Islamic Republic of Iran since the revolution in 1979 and an extensive library of documents relating to human rights and democracy.
Uncovering the truth about deaths in East Timor One of Benetech's biggest Human Rights projects has been our work for Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation in East Timor (CAVR). The report has been completed, but not released publicly. There have been many articles about what the report does or does not say, and Benetech human rights team has not been able to comment because of the still-confidential nature of the report.
Four Big Questions about the Future of the Web I am part of supporting Compumentor's big NetSquared event, and they asked me to answer four key questions about the future of the web and the nonprofit sector. I had fun answering the questions, and also tapped the considerable brainpower and experience here at Benetech in answering the questions. I'll just quote the last question and my answer, because these are really critical issues!
Donated Servers We just received several servers donated by an anonymous investment firm in our area over the holidays. These are going to come in handy for experimenting with new server projects, as well as being a backup for our main in-house server. We really appreciate this kind of support: in-kind technology donations of things we need are very helpful!

Ponzi, who I met at blogher, loves postcards. She has a wonderful tradition - sending other bloggers postcards from her travels. Most recently, she visited Bangkok. I was the lucky recipient of the above postcard with the cool Red Cross stamp. My kids loved it and Sara took it to pre-school with her. I'm continuing Ponzi's tradition but with a slight twist.
I received an email from Tomas Krag telling me about his new book on wireless networking for the developing world : Together with a group of my friends and colleagues, I have been. working on a book specifically about wireless networking for the developing world. I got an email from Dave Pentecost asking if me if I was the same Beth Kanter (not that article is like 5 years old!) and if I had any advice on credit card vendors that are nonprofit friendly. (I don't track this stuff closely anymore, but pointed him to a few other sources.). Dave was asking for his wife whose heart and brain child is the entrepreneurial program of the Lower Eastside Girls Club.
Michael Glibert wrote an interesting thought piece on the N-TEN Blog called Asking the Wrong Questions: Challenging Technocentrism in Nonprofit Technology Planning. I wholeheartedly agree with his thesis and one that we're keeping mind as we design our NTC session on blogging. I believe that most practitioners of nonprofit technology planning are asking the wrong questions.

A work in progress, it is intended that mode. will act as a space for open dialogue, evolving at the hands. of its authors and contributors. How did I discover this new blog? Well. Today I discovered an interesting blog named ScoutSeven Blog Land. ScoutSeven is a project devoted to "harnessing the convergence of innovative online technology, grassroots organizing, organizational development and social justice values." The founder is Leda Dederich whose expertise is technology for grassroots organizing. What caught my eye was a post on chocolate bribes. and fair trade chocolate at that!
After a long day without much fun, I took a break to catch up on some bloglines reading. It was only going to be for five minutes, I swear. but at Network-Centric Advocacy blog, I found fastr flickr a game that uses flickr images. It loads ten images that all share a common tag, one by one, and you guess what the tag is. (What a nice tool to use in a training session.).

Across the nonprofit sector, organizations invest heavily in donor retention efforts, yet the struggle of cultivating lasting relationships remains. While attracting new donors is crucial, the lack of repeat donors poses significant financial risks. Through a comprehensive analysis of industry data, experts argue that there is a direct correlation between donor burnout, donor retention, and the talent retention crisis.
I'm mentor for a blog project for young women from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia entitled YoungCaucasusWomen. Here's the project description from the site: Recruited from current FLEX. students, the young women will be trained in personal citizen journalism to be published on a weblog (a WWW publishing tool, available for public consumption.) The students will post a minimum of once a week on an assigned topic.
Britt Bravo over at Netsquared found an excellent post via the net2 tag entitled " Why Nonprofits Should Blog." The post was written by Whitney Smith of the nonprofit, Girls for a Change , a client of Voce Communications. I am interested in this article because I'm the session designer at this year's NTC Conference for a session tentatively entitled "The Blogging Revolution: Evolving Best Practices that Can Make Blogging Work for Some Nonprofits.
