Bookshare.org excitement

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

I just got back from the ATIA conference, which included meetings of the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS) committees. ATIA is one of the biggest assistive technology conferences of the year and we had many exciting conversations about Bookshare.org for Education (B4E, our $32 million five year project to deliver accessible books to every student with a print disability in the U.S.).

ROI: Can You Quantify the Untangible? You Can't Quantify Love (or can you?)

Beth's Blog: How Nonprofits Can Use Social Media

Photo by Mayr. I'm working up a presentation and workshop on ROI and NpTech for Legal Services Corporation TIG Conference in a couple of weeks. So, the most simplistic definition of Return on Investment (ROI) is the difference between cost and income (or quantified benefits) and expressed in dollar amounts or percentages. VRM: CRM's flip side

Michael Stein's Non-profit Technology Blog

Every non-profit now talks about needing to improve their CRM. But thanks to a post by Jay Deragon , I've been doing some reading this week about the emerging concept of VRM, or Vendor Relationship Management -- If CRM refers to software-based tools for organizations to manage their relationships with customers, constituents, and supporters, VRM is the complimentary set of tools, helping those individuals to manage their relationships with companies, organizations, and communities.

For-profit or nonprofit: what's the issue?

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

I frequently get asked by folks I know in the for-profit tech sector (where I come from), why we don't focus on making money. The team at Benetech seems very strong, and it seems clear we could go off and find a way to make big money. I agree. But, that's not Benetech. We chose a nonprofit form to do those things we were sure the for-profit world wouldn't do.

Several weeks before my birthday every year, my mom calls and asks "What do you like for your birthday?" And every year since she became a grandmother to an adopted Cambodian child, I said, "Make a donation to the Sharing Foundation." This year, she wondered whether I was going to ask my family to give me an outhouse for my birthday.

Systematizing User Support

Michael Stein's Non-profit Technology Blog

When I started this "Help-Desk" series I wrote: "A great step forward for your informal user support desk is to provide them with a few procedures and tools that can help them be effective and efficient in this function." But so far all I've talked about is the toolkit: putting a ticketing system in place. What about those improved procedures? Actually, for our little company developing a ticketing system proved to be the key to process improvement: the system made it easier for us to describe,

Keeping a Gratitude Journal: Fuel for the Activist Life

An activist friend of mine recently asked, "How do you get over it when life is unfair in a really big way?" I told her, "Keep a gratitude journal." I can't remember where I first saw this idea. Maybe Oprah ? It certainly isn't mine, but it definitely works. One of the things I've come to realize is that in order to create positive social change, you have to create positive personal change at the same time.

I was claiming that getting your informal help desk operation organized with a ticketing system does more than streamline that operation - it provides information that can increase your organization's effectiveness. It can have a real impact on mission. So what information do you want to track in your help desk ticketing system? Of course you need to know who reported it, how they described it, when it came in, who worked on it, and how it was resolved.
