Benetech is all about applying values in the development of technology. I'm excited to announce the appointment of someone who lives these values as our new Chief Technical Officer, Dr. Patrick Ball! Finding the right person for CTO is one of my biggest goals this year, and it didn't dawn on me initially that Patrick wanted to move onto a broader stage from his position as the head of Benetech's Human Rights Program.

Susan Tenby from TechSoup sent me an email about a free, two-day online event at TechSoup on Social Networking for Nonprofits. This event will be an asynchronous discussion that will occur in the TechSoup.org forums. It will be hosted by Chris Law, co-founder of Tribe.net, Neal Gorenflo, Director of Business Development of Care2Connect.com, Alex Mouldovan, founder of CrowdFactory.com and John Lorance, Associate Director of CompuMentor???
Here's another interesting article from back in Janaury I just read while sorting through the stacks of magazines in my office. From January's Technology Review : " The Internet is Broken." by David Talbot. You can find it online here. Most of what we read about internet innovation these days focuses on "Web 2.0", on all the new interactive internet applications coming on-line.

Do you really know your donors? Not just what they give, but who they are? 👥 In this interactive session, we’ll break down how nonprofits can use behavioral indicators (affinity, recency, frequency, and monetary value) to build prospecting segments that go beyond wealth screening and actually align with donor identity. You’ll walk away with practical strategies to move beyond basic demographics and cultivate supporters based on how they already engage with you!
As I mentioned in a post a couple weeks ago, I've started writing a weekly feature over at Blogher called Solutionary Women. I thought I'd share this week's interview with Mary Brune, co-founder of MOMS (Making Our Milk Safe). Mary is a professional writer and mom to her daughter, Olivia. "MOMS was founded by four nursing mothers to address the threat of toxic chemicals in human breast milk.

I should announce my speaking gigs more often: I'll be speaking tomorrow (Thursday) at the PARC Forum about Benetech: 4 pm April 20, 2006. Friday afternoon, I'll drive to Stockton and give a similar talk at the University of the Pacific. I am really getting into speaking: having a lot of fun telling stories and getting people excited about social entrepreneurship.

I received an email from Paul Lamb encouraging participating in the " Nonprofits of the Future " project. It's an opportunity to dream and vision a little. Paul asks us to answer this question: "What the technologically empowered nonprofit of the future will look like 5 or 10 years down the road?" Paul offers a few wonderful scenarios and there is a lot to ponder in the comments.
I hope most of you have checked out the Non-Profit Blog Exchange that I refer to over in the left sidebar. It's a great way to keep up with the non-profit blogosphere. This week another of the "virtual events" is underway, where we all get paired up and write about each other. When the music stopped, I was dancing with Hilary Marsh, author of Online Content: Thoughts and Ideas.
Payroll compliance is a cornerstone of business success, yet for small and midsize businesses, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of federal, state, and local regulations. Mistakes can lead to costly penalties and operational disruptions, making it essential to adopt advanced solutions that ensure accuracy and efficiency.
When your mother leaves you a message, in the same tone that she leaves you a message to remember to buy sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection, that you might want to keep your eye on legislation challenging network neutrality and to go to savetheinternet.com and publicknowledge.com , you know it's serious. So for those of you whose mother did not call you this morning, here's the scoop.
I'm responding to Paul Light's first post on Social Edge: Let There Be Light: 1. Do social entrepreneurs exist? The question of "social entrepreneur" being too exclusively applied is somewhat amusing to me. For me, the two main reasons to identify as a social entrepreneur are: 1. You get to meet people who are much more like you than typical nonprofit or for-profit leaders, and 2.
PCs for poor students. I had a great meeting with Timothy Anderson, the head of the World Computer Exchange , on a recent visit to Boston. I have watched his project as it's grown over the past few years. They take thousands of used PCs (but still decent ones, they are starting to focus on Pentium IIIs) and ship them by the containerload to schools in the developing world.

At 1:00 p.m. today, I'm taking the N-TEN Webinar by Andy Goodman which is the same title as his new book, "Why Bad Presentations Happen to Good Causes." I highly recommend the book -- I can't rave enough about it. You can order it here. The N-TEN blog has an excerpt from the book here.

Across the nonprofit sector, organizations invest heavily in donor retention efforts, yet the struggle of cultivating lasting relationships remains. While attracting new donors is crucial, the lack of repeat donors poses significant financial risks. Through a comprehensive analysis of industry data, experts argue that there is a direct correlation between donor burnout, donor retention, and the talent retention crisis.
I came across CommunIT by way of Mike Seyfang - LearnDog. Via Christine.net comes a summary of a discussion from N-TEN's NTC Conference last month. This one well worth reading if you're interested in social software and nonprofits. Christine reports that this chicken and egg question came up: " Do people's social needs drive the emergence of new technology, or does. the emergence of these new technologies drive what people want to do?
Effectively managing cloud technology is getting more complex. From cybersecurity concerns, vendor lock-in, cost increases, or lack of transparency on costs, it can quickly get out of control. Knowing what you can control and finding a platform that’s built with nonprofits in mind is key.
