Most social entrepreneurs I know operate somewhere in between, and for good reasons. Charity is an important and good thing, but charity can be a powerful negative force when misapplied. My example of this is the abusive use of foreign aid in ways that support the giver and damage the recipient.

Good News! Starbucks Signed an Agreement with Ethiopia

Guess what? Your advocacy made a difference. Oxfam announced yesterday that Starbucks signed an agreement with Ethiopian farmers: "Starbucks and Ethiopia have finalized an agreement that ends their trademark dispute and brings both sides together in partnership to help Ethiopian farmers. This agreement has the potential to give these farmers a fair share of the profits for their world-renowned coffees, and it’s what Oxfam has been pushing for since November.

I was their Donation Coordinator at the time (this was before they were bought out by Coca-Cola). I read a lot of books during that commute, but the one I remember the most was The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawken. Before being green was cool, Hawken was writing about the environmental impact of business and the importance of balancing profit and planet.

When is an email campaign SPAM?

I wrote about this a while back but I still frequently hear our clients worrying that every email they send out might be violating the CAN-SPAM act. Calm down. The law does not prohibit the sending of unsolicited commercial emails. It does not require people to opt-in to an email list in order for you to communicate with them. What it does do is set some very clear requirements that your unsolicited commercial email must meet.
