One of the things I often talk about in my public speaking is the continuum that goes from pure profit orientation to pure charity. Most social entrepreneurs I know operate somewhere in between, and for good reasons. Charity is an important and good thing, but charity can be a powerful negative force when misapplied. My example of this is the abusive use of foreign aid in ways that support the giver and damage the recipient.

Marc Sirkin at last year's Games for Change Conference. Marc is the Chief Marketing Officer at the IRC. I've been following Marc Sirkin's blog for about a year before I met him at last year's Games for Change Conference where he taught me Brain Age and Mario. (At the time, my son was in the process of earning 50 stickers for NinendoDS and I wanted to be able to play with him.

This op ed was derived from remarks I made to the California Emerging Technology Fund's Roundtable recently. I want to sound the call for the technology community to get behind raising the floor for everybody around the planet.

Benetech has been seeing incredible growth in our Martus projects over the last year! We now have over 60,000 bulletins which have been backed up to secure Martus servers by over 1000 users across the world. This represents 400% growth over last year. This tremendous growth is due in large part to the continued use of Martus by our partners working in Guatemala with the National Police Archive, and projects gathering data about Burma, Iraq and the Philippines.

My Flickr Stream. Pretty cool new feature from Google Maps - street view. You click on street view and you can see 360 photo of the street. I'm reminded about what Jerry from Electronic Sheep said at the 2006 Games for Change Conference about virtual worlds as a platform. He something along the lines that the next web platform will be walking through google maps in 3D.

Today I joined Second Life , a virtual 3-D world built by its residents. At first I really didn't want to. I already spend way too much time online, but then there started to be events that I wanted to check out. Like in January when Mia Farrow spoke in Second Life about Darfur at a virtual event sponsored by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum's Committee on Conscience.

Across the nonprofit sector, organizations invest heavily in donor retention efforts, yet the struggle of cultivating lasting relationships remains. While attracting new donors is crucial, the lack of repeat donors poses significant financial risks. Through a comprehensive analysis of industry data, experts argue that there is a direct correlation between donor burnout, donor retention, and the talent retention crisis.

This week Jeff Atwood has a great post in his Coding Horror blog, excerpting from Steve McConnell's 1996 book Rapid Development. He quotes a list of "36 Classic Development Mistakes" that can doom your project. I've had to extricate teams (and I admit it, myself) from many of these over the years. Jeff and Steve are thinking about software development efforts, but any technology project is prone to these mistakes.

Ten years ago I used to take the bus every day from downtown San Francisco to South San Francisco where there was an Odwalla office. I was their Donation Coordinator at the time (this was before they were bought out by Coca-Cola). I read a lot of books during that commute, but the one I remember the most was The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawken. Before being green was cool, Hawken was writing about the environmental impact of business and the importance of balancing profit and planet.
