Visiting Aravind

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

After years of hearing about the incredible Aravind Eye Hospitals , I finally was able to visit this prototypical social enterprise. Their model is to charge 30-40% of their patients enough to pay for their costs as well as the rest of the patients, as well as something extra (which generates funds for capital expansion). I visited the main hospital in Madurai, where Aravind was founded by the late Dr.

Wikis for Curriculum Development and Instructional Materials

Beth's Blog: How Nonprofits Can Use Social Media

I've mostly used wikis as a personal portfolio and have participated in community or collaborative wikis facilitated by others. I've been a participant in design discussions about wiki projects, but never the main architect. I have a project coming up where I'm thinking through a collaborative design for say - curriculum development, a repository for existing instructional materials, and to leverage knowledge from a group of practitioners online (aka SME) to add to the curriculum/knowledge sharin

Social media and the Surveillance Culture

Michael Stein's Non-profit Technology Blog

Living as I do right in the heart of D.C., things like this happen: I had lunch the other day with a friend who is very knowledgeable about the hacker world within in the so-called "intelligence community". This is a world where it's common to get your secret clearance before you are old enough to buy a beer. And a sizable crew of these young folks are deployed to monitor - and participate in on behalf of the agency - all sorts of social media activity.

Zeno's British Airways Baggage Paradox

Beneblog: Technology Meets Society

I remember being fascinated with Zeno's Paradox as a kid. The version I heard had to do with never getting someplace because you always had to get half-way there first (and then half-way of the remaining difference, and so on). The idea was that motion and getting someplace is an illusion. And so it seemed with our baggage from British Airways on my current trip to India.

Nonprofit Blogging and Social Networking Policies: Examples?

Beth's Blog: How Nonprofits Can Use Social Media

When I was in Minnesota, one of the questions I got was about blogging and social networking policies. I mentioned a link from IBM via Elsua (Luis Suarez). Carmen left me a follow up comment. It wasn't in my wiki and so I just added. Now, I swear I remember seeing something from Easter Seals or another nonprofit on a listserv that mentioned either social networking policy or blogging policy.

It's amazing how time flies so quickly these days. I blinked and the Skoll Forum was already in the past. It's worth recapping some of the events that stuck in my brain. On the opening evening, my favorite section was when Pat Mitchell (former head of PBS) moderated Dr. Nafis Sadik, Karen Tse and Jody Williams. Dr. Sadik has worked on women's health for many years in the UN system and mentioned her unsuccessful audience with the Pope (I assume John Paul II) on some of the policies coming out of
